Kourion (March 4- April 30, 1985). Located on a hillock1 milefrom the sea in the
middle of the ancient town of Kourion,this
Hellenistic-Romansite reveals a large complexof publicand privatebuildings.The site
is part of an archaeological complex of a
Roman city consistingof a theater, basilica,
stadium, and Temple of Apollo. A monumental marble colonnaded portico (stoa)
and mosaics are also part of the attraction
of this site. Getting there: Kourionis 1 mile
westofEpiskopivillageand 12 mileswestof
Limassol to the left of the main road to

Kourion City (June 1985). Kourion City
was hit by an earthquake in A.D.365; the
area affected by the earthquake is being
readied for visitors. The theater, basilica,
forum,Sanctuaryof Apollo,and mosaicsof

Ripati (June 15-July 31, 1985). Ripatiwas
discovered in 1984 and preliminary test
trenchesreveala Late BronzeAge-Hellenistic site. It is the first Late Bronze Age site
found in the northwest corner of Cyprus
and is presumed to be the predecessor of
the later Marion site. Paphos Museum,
Akamas National Forest, Folis, and other
major sites in the vicinity.Getting there:

Sanctuary of Apollo Hylates, Kourion
(September 1-15, 1985; daily sunrise to
sunset). The site,occupiedfromthe Archaic
to Roman periods, was a large important
cult center which continued a Bronze Age
type of cultthrough the Archaicperiod.Tne

newlyreconstructed Temple of Apollo and
other Roman monumental buildings are

Sotira Kaminoudhia (Allyear, daily). This
small settlement is the first of the Philia
Culture (transitional Chalcolithic/Early
Bronze Age) to be excavated on Cyprus.
The large multi-roomed houses yielded
many stone and ceramicartifactsand a few
terracottas;a cemeterywas also found. The
Neolithicsite of Sotira Teppes is adjacent,
and a small museum in Episkopi village
both sites. Nearby sites

ISRAEL
Aphek-Antipatris (All year; excavations
June 21-Jtuy 19, 1985). This site, occupied from the EarlyBronze through Arabic
has yielded impressive remains
periods,
trom the Middle to Late Bronze Aae and
Roman times.The important biblicalsite of
Aphek is noteworthyfor a seriesof restored
Canaanite palaces. The town of Antipatris,
built by Herod the Great, contains remains
of the theater, forum and cardo with shops.

Capernaum (May 25-June 26, 1985).
Capernaum, a site of about fiveacres occupied in Late Roman, Byzantineand Early
Arabic times, is locateci
on the northwest
shore of the Sea of Galilee. The remains
brought to lightso far providea unique look
at the juncture of Byzantine/Arabicculture.
The cityplan and an earlyRomanbathhouse
discoveredin 1984 can oe easilyseen in the
architecturalremains.The largest hoard of

Islamicgold dinars ever found in Israelwas
discoveredhere in 1982. Other sites in the
vicinityinclude the restored synagogueon
the Franciscanside of Capernaum, one of
the best preservedsynagoguesin all of Israel,
and the Mount of Béatitudes.Gettingthere:

is devoted to creatingan open-air museum
of rural life in the biblicalperiod. Visitors
can view farming terraces and buildings,
wine and oil presses, cisterns and water
conduits.Recent excavationshave revealed
a completelypreserved domed bathhouse
of the Late Koman-Byzantine

use untilthe 9th century.Other buildingsincludea theater and a 6tn-centurysynagogue.
Sites in the area are Kursi,Capernaum and
Tiberias.There are beacheson LakeKinneret
(Sea of Galilee),and an alligatorfarm and

1985). The walls, bastions ana a gate of
Eqed, a Second Templeperiod hillfortress
in the Judean piedmont, offer much material and a vivid illustration of the period.
Visitorscan also see the caves usea as secret bases durino the Bar Kochba War.At
Emmausis a well-preservedRoman-Byzantine bath complete with roof.
Aqueducts,
rock-cuttombs,variousancient agricultural
installations, the excavated churches of
Emmaus, and the ruins of a Crusader castle are nearby. Canada Park offers picnic
