Tel Dor (All year; excavations July 3August 14, 1985). This site was a major
coastal town and port primarilyin the Iron
Age,and the Persian,Hellenisticand Roman
periods.A Roman aqueduct and street and
impressiveremains of the Hellenisticfortifications,residentialquarter and temple are
visible.On-site museum open by appointment. A public beach is on the site; the
Museum for Marine and RegionalArchaeology is at nearby Kibbutz Nasholim;
Caesarea, with many antiquities, a beach,
restaurants, and art qalleries, is a 10minute drive. Getting there: Tel Dor is 30
kilometerssouth of Haifa via the old road
(not the freeway) from Tel Aviv to Haifa;
turn west at Hof Dor; the site and museum
are a 5-minute walkfrom the public beach

Telel Efshar and Mikhmoret, Emeq Hefer
(May 26-July 7, 1985). Tel el Efshar was
occupied from the Early Bronze Aae I
through Byzantine times. The Middle
BronzeAqe IIAsettlement at Efsharhas revealed information- in stratifiedsequence
-about the earliest part of MBIIAperiod
in Palestine.Mikhmorethas well-preserved
Persian buildings,a well and Phoenicianstyle shaft tombs. Museums are located in
the Ma'aborot Kibbutz and Emeq Hefer.
Gettingthere: The sites are near Netanyah,
north of TelAvivon the coast. From Netanyah, drive east to Sharon Junction and
north to the PAZgasoline station; take the

Tel el-'Orème (Kinneret) (September 1October 15, 1985). An important site located next to the Sea of Galilee,it probably
can be identified with ancient Kinneret.
Occupation dates from the Early Bronze
and Late Bronze periods to Iron Age II
(100Ö-700B.c). Excavationshave revealed
a gate, 11-meter-widedefense wall, and a

citadel with a large structure (probably a
palace). Tabqha, Capernaum and Korazin
are in the area. Gettingthere: Takethe road
north from Tiberias.No appointment necessary for admission; no guide available;
accessibleby bus; youth hostel in the vicinity; accessible to persons in wheelchairs.

Tel Miqne-Ekron (June 23-August 2,
1985). Tel Miqne, one of the largest Iron
Age sites (12th-8th century B.C.)in Israel,is
identifiedwith Ekron, one of the 5 capital
cities of the Philistines.Mudbrickcity wall
sectionsare associatedwiththe occupation
of the Sea Peoples at the beginning of the
12th century B.C.City walls, gates, public
and private houses, as well as an olive oil
industrial area have been uncovered. The
sites of Gezer (north) and Lachish (south)
are 1 hour away. Getting there: Tel Miqne
is in the northern inner coastal plain near
KibbutzRevadim, 1 hour prom Jerusalem
on the road to Ashkelon;AlbrightInstitute,

Timna Valley(Daily,from morning to late
afternoon; restoration in 1985). Extensive
evidencefor miningand the practiceof cults
has been discovered in the Timna Valley,
the site of mining areas, miner's and smettine camps and cult sites occupied from the
Cnalcolithicperiod to the Roman era. During the 19th-20thEgyptiandynastiesTimna
Valleywas the central cult place. Several
other sites are in the vicinityand a nature
reserve for wild animals is near Yotvetah.
Getting there: Timna Valley is about 20
miles north of Eilat. The road to the site is
well marked with signs. No appointment

Yiftahel (Late Summer and Autumn
1985).The site (2,400square meters)is one
of the most extensivelyexposedoccupations
of the late prehistoricperiods (EarlyBronze
Age I). Several extremely well-preserved
structures (some complete) have survived
from the Early Bronze Age I and Neolithic
periods. Nazareth, Megiddo, Hazorea Museum, and Beth Shearim are in the area.
Getting there: Nahal Yiftahel lies 9 kilometers west of Nazareth in a valleyon the
west side of Kibbutz Hasolelim. Appointment necessary for admission and guide;
not accessible by public transportation ;
no accommodations in the area, but some
lodgingmay be availablewith the adjacent
kibbutz; accessible to persons in wheelchairs. Volunteersaccepted; fees required

JORDAN
Abila (Quailibah) (All year; excavations
planned for 1986). This site includes two
tellsand an extensivecemetery.Potteryfrom
the EarlyBronzeAge througn Arabictimes
points to a particularlylong occupation.Remains on Tell Abila include an acropolis
wall,many structures,and an apse of a large
church; on the southern tell,
Byzantine
Knirbet Umm el'Amad, lie columns of an
ancient temple and a theater. Other sites in
the vicinityinclude Umm Qeis (Gadara),
about 15 miles west; Tabaqat Fahl (Pella),
about 20 miles south of Umm Qeis; and
Jerash, about 35 miles south of Irbid.Getting there: Drive 8 kilometers north from
Irbidin northernJordan throughBeitRas to
a fork; take the right fork on the blacktop
road north-northeast; continue about 8 kilometers,passing a militarytruck depot; look
for a dirt road on the left that leads west
through a field to Abila. No appointment
necessary for admission; guide available
through the Irbid Officeof the Department

from Irbid;hotelsand restaurantsinAmman

Baq'ah Valley (May-July 1985). Work in
the Baq'ah Valleyhas concentratedon technologicalchange around 1200 B.C.,particularly the appearance of steel at the same
time the ceramic industry declined. (See

The 1985 season willfocus on a search for
Late Bronze/IronAgevillages,a magnetometer surveyof kiln areas, and excavationof
an iron smeltingsite and pottery kilns.The
Roman town of Jerash is 20 kilometers
north. Getting there: The Baq'ah Valleyis
20 kilometersnorthwestof Amman on the

el-LejiUn(All year; excavations June 10July 31, 1985). el-Lejjtrn,located east of
the Dead Sea, was part of a Late Roman
militarybuildup for border control in the
eastern colonies. Founded by Diocletian,
this well-preservedlegionary fortress was
occupied ca. A.D.300-550. Significantportions of the fortification,headquartersbuilding, and barracks survive.(See ARCHAEOLOGY,September/October, 1984). Getting
