Pella (Tabaqat Fahl) (All year). Neolithic

Petra (Allyear; excavations planned June
15-August 14, 1985). A major site in
Jordan, Petra was occupied during the
Palaeolithic,Iron Age, Nabataean (4tn century B.C.-4thcentury A.D.),and Crusader
periods. Famous as the capital of the Nabataean kingdom, the site has monuments

spring between Madaba and Amman,

served as a key site in the
Tell
Bronzeand Iron Ages.One of a ring of Ammonite sites in the hills overlooking the
Madaba Plains, it is also one of the largest
tells in central Jordan. Mt.Nebo, Mukkayat
and TellHesban are in the vicinity.Getting

Jízãn, Red Sea Coast (January-March
1985). Located in an area little known
archaeologically,Jízãn is the site of a chain
of harbor towns occupied from the Neolithicperiod into Bronze-IronAge to Early
Islamictimes. These port settlements were
engaged in trade up and down the Red Sea
coast and acrossto Africa.Attentionfocuses
on the port of cArthr,mentioned 1000 years
ago in a geographicaltreatise by the Islamic
scholar and traveler Ibn Hawqal. Museum

Taima' (January-March 1985). During
the Iron Age and probably earlier, Taimã'
was a large walled city. The city walls of
Taimã' stretch over 5 kilometersand even
today are breached in only a few places.
The area is very scenic and not far from

TURKEY
Aphrodisias (All year; excavatiöns Julymid-October 1985). Aphrodisiasis one of
the major sculpture centers of the GraecoRoman period. Among the many well-preserved monuments are a stadium, theater,
odeon, and temple of /tohrodite. An onsite museum houses much of the sculpture
discoveredin recent years. Hierapolis(Pamukkale)in the provinceof Denizliis about
V/2hours away. Getting there: Aphrodisias
is located near the hamlet of Geyre in the
province of Aydin, 230 kilometers (3-4

Arycanda (All year; excavations July
1985). The occupation of Arycanda goes
back to the 5th century B.C.and forwardto
the Roman era. The city was of great importance in both Roman and Lyciantimes;
many of its structures are well preserved;
among them are baths,gymnasium,templebasilica,agora, musichall,bouleuterion,theater, stadion, stoas, temple-tombsand rockcut tombs. Limyra (Yuva-Turunçova)and
Elmali are in the area. Getting there: The
highwaybetween Finikeand Elmalipasses

Phaselis (All year; excavations AugustSeptember 1985). Occupied in the Greek
through Byzantine periods, Phaselis was
one of the major commercialcenters of the
Aegean and Mediterraneanworld.The city
is on a pine-coveredpeninsula on the Mediterranean coast. Remains include harbors,
agoras, Roman baths and latrines, and a
theater. An archaeological museum is in
Antalya, and the sites of Olympos, Side,
Aspendos,Perge, and Arycandaare nearby.
Gettingthere: Phaselisis 45 kilometersfrom
Antalya on the Antalya-Finikecoast road.
