Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University,
Cambridge,MA: "Coinsin GreekArt: The
Collectionof Arthur Stone Dewing"(April
4-June 9, 1985), is a major exhibition of
one of the finest collections of silver and
gold Greekcoins in the United States. Featured in this collectionof 250 examples of
Greek coin-making art will be coins from
Lydia Miletus, some of the first coins ever
minted, two outstanding signed decadrachms from Syracuse, coins from Carthage, Athens, Cyprus, and Pergamon,
and Celticcoins minted in the imitation of
Greek models. The coins range in date
from the sixth to the first centuries B.C.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New
York:"The Kronos Collection:The Flame
and the Lotus" (through March 31, 1985),
is an outstanding collection of over 85
Indian and Southeast Asian worksof artstone and bronzesculptureand paintingsdating from the 3rd century B.C. to the
18th century A.D."The John M. Crawford,
Jr. Collection: Chinese Painting and Calligraphy" (through June 16, 1985), consists of nearly 200 works from the 11th to
the 20th century, and includes major masterpieces- hand-scrolls, hanging scrolls,
albums, and fans- by many of the foremost artists of their time. "Man and the
Horse" (through September 1, 1985),celebrates the splendor of men's and women's
equestrian costumes. Included are 150fine
examplesof riding habits and accessories,
15 sporting vehicles (coaches and carriages) and a large number of artworks
representing the horse and rider.
Museumof Our NationalHeritage, Lexington, MA: "A Decade of Collecting: Maps"
(through May 26, 1985),showcases68 rare
and outstanding maps from the museum's
permanent collection. The maps- prized
as historicaldocumentsand worksof aitare a graphic record of the history and
developmentof the United States from its
inceptionto the CivilWar."Sitting Ducks:
WildfowlDecoys from the Shelburne Museum" (through April 14, 1985), features
70 decoys made between 1800 and 1940,
created with such a high degree of artistry that they are now prized as American folk art.
Peabody Museum, Salem, MA: "The Tribal Style: Selections from the African
Collectionat the Peabody Museum of Salem" (through May 1985), presents early
19th-century tribal objects reflecting the
flourishingmaritimetrade of NewEngland
ships along the west and east coasts of

Rediscovered:Everyday Life in Ancient
Egypt," (through September 30, 1985),
presents objects from the Museum's extensive Egyptian collectionwhich are not
normally on view.The exhibit includes art
and artifacts from virtually every Egyptian epoch, including a bronze cat statue

and a model of a Nile boat.
PhiladelphiaMuseumof Art, Philadelphia,
PA: "Fleeting Moments: Japanese Prints
from the Collection" (opens March 23,
1985), presents 80 Japanese wood-block
prints ranging from ca. 1715to 1860.The
rarely seen collection represents artists
from the Ukiyo-e ("pictures of the floating world") school.
Staten Island Museum, Staten Island,
NY: "TVadeNetworks of Staten Island:
Exploring Community Through Archaeology" (March 9-June 26, 1985),provides
the first overviewof the archaeologicalresources of Staten Island, in an exhibit
which shows how archaeological techniques can be used to illuminate community history. Stone, ceramic and glass
artifacts from 12 Staten Island sites reveal the changing trade networks of this
island community from Palaeoindian occupation to the late nineteenth century.
Related artifacts from Manhattan and
New Jersey sites, historic documents,
maps and photographs provide context.

The Textile Museum, Washington, DC:
"Temple,Household, Horseback: Rugs of
the Tibetan Plateau" (through March 31,
1985), includes nearly 70 Tibetan pile
carpets. Primarily utilitarian, their designs
incorporate both Chinese motifs such as
dragons and stylized flowers,and the use
of traditional Tibetan brilliantly colored

The University Museum, University of
Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA: "Music
and Dance in Highland New Guinea"
(through March 23, 1985),features 65 color
photographs by anthropological photographer Jordan Wright. Views include pictures of the Mt. Hagen/Goroka Fair as
well as highland villages of New Guinea.

Living, Working and Changing Together"
(through June 30, 1985), illustrates how
humans domesticated the dog, horse, cat,
and cow through full-sizemounted skeletal specimens and ancient artifacts from
many cultures. Also on display are the
original bones of one of the earliest domesticated dogs (ca. 10,000 B.P.) excavated
from Jaguar Cave in Idaho.
MIDWEST
The Boise Gallery of Art, Boise, ID: "African Pragmatism" (through March 31,
1985), illustrates the integration of art and
culture in the African lifestyle where ritual and ceremony are important ways of
relating to everyday occurrences. The 45
works are examples from the Ibo, Baule,
Yoruba, and Fang culture groups.
Cincinnati Art Museum, OH: "Cincinnati
Collects Oriental Art" (March 7-April 28,
1985), consists of approximately 120 objects from more than 20 private collections
in the Cincinnati area. The range of the
exhibit will extend from the Islamic world
to Japan, China and Korea and the Near
East. Objects include ceramics, metal
works, textiles, paintings and furniture.
"The Wise Silence: Photographs by Paul
Caponigro" (March 29-June 1, 1985),displays more than 200 images from one of
the most respected contemporary photographers. The colorful collection includes
photographs of the southwest, Stonehenge

and other stone monuments in Great Britain and France. Circulatedby the International Museum of Photography at George

The Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit, MI:
"The Precious Legacy: Judaic TVeasures
from the CzechoslovakState Collections"
(March 12-May 5, 1985),includes nearly
300 objects made to adorn the Torah, synagogue furnishings, alms boxes, burial society paintings, and a full spectrum of
community, holiday, and ritual objects
from the State Jewish Museum in Prague.

early 1950sby Carl Biegen.The exhibition
features artifacts from BronzeAge Greece
along with watercolor reconstructions by

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO: "Masters of Japanese Calligraphy: 8th to 9th Century" (through
March 31, 1985), focuses on 150 masterpieces in the form of hanging scrolls,
album leaves, hand-scrolls and folding
screens.The exhibit is the first in America
to present such a comprehensivesurvey of
the developmentof calligraphy in Japan.
The Oriental Institute, The University of
Chicago, Chicago, IL: "The Quest for
Prehistory: The Oriental Institute and the
Origins of Civilization in the Near East"
(through December1985),presents the results of the Prehistoric Project, concerned
with the origins of agriculture and settled
village life in the ancient Near East. The
exhibit includes the reconstruction of a
house excavatedat Jarmo, a villagein Iraq
occupied9,000years ago.
St. Louis Art Museum, St. Louis, MO:
"Te Maori: Maori Art from New Zealand
Collections"(through May 26, 1985),features 200 sculptures and carvings in wood,
stone, bone, ivory, and shell, dating from
about A.D. 800 to 1900. The exhibit includes architectural elements, musical
instruments, monumental sculptures,
canoe prows, weapons, and objects of
