Easy
The best time to shop for your travel
needs? Every day. By that I mean, think
travel whenever you window shop,
browse through catalogs, or go shopping
with other chores in mind.
If you wait until your trip is imminent, you'll frantically try to remember
where it was you saw that nifty luggage,
and wonder where in the world you can
buy a travel doorlock, or how long it will
take you to order a travel iron or passport wallet by mail.
Le Bon Voyage
If you happen to live in the Boston
area, you can easily get to one of the
best of a handful of stores in the U.S.
that specialize in travel needs: Le Bon
Voyage. (Look for a similar store in your
area.) Located at 6 Faneuil Hall Marketplace (Boston, MA 02109, telephone
617-523-6640)in Quincy Market, Le Bon
Voyage carries 1,500 travel accessories
and related gift merchandise items, lb
order, call or write. They don't have a
catalog as yet, but accept credit cards.
There's a second Le Bon Voyage store in
Harvard Square, Cambridge, MA.
I talked with one of the three owners,
Michael Lifschultz, who handles buying
for the two stores, and whose aim is onestop shopping for travelers. The stores
carry everything for travel except hard
luggage and clothing.
This includes travel accessories such
as soft luggage; dual voltage appliances;
folding hair dryers; voltage converter
kits; very small travel clocks; money
belts; passport cases; matching sets of
colorful plastic soap boxes and non-leak
bottles; folding toothbrushes, cups, and
pillboxes; plastic manicure sets of nail
files, scissors with covers, and nail
brushes; and folding hair brushes. And
in what the owners term the "paranoia"
section you can find small smoke alarms
($30) for travelers concerned about hotel
fires; and the Portabolt, a $10 lock for
the inside of a hotel door. All of these
gadgets are tried out to make sure they
work, and the company is proud of their
repeat business and guarantee satisfaction.
Le Bon Voyageis now outfitting many
travelers with very popular full-sized
"convertible" luggage, which combines
the best of backpacks and regular luggage, with backpack straps that can be
hidden away. So, carry this luggage by
handle or shoulder strap while in the city

or your hotel lobby, but pull out the
backpack straps when the going gets
rough and you want to ease the back
strain that comes with gripping heavy
bags.
The most popular gift merchandise for
travel or other use includes: a small, slim
(diameter of a quarter) can of shaving
cream that carries a disposable razor on
top; a soap stick the size of a small lipstick (rub a little in the palm of your
hand to produce lather); and a similar
small deodorant stick. Also, the Swatch
Watch- a very lightweight $30 waterproof, shock resistant plastic watch in
30 different colors and many fun styles,
for travelers who like to leave their expensive watches at home when they go
traveling.
Orvis
Be sure to think of your travel needs
when you're perusing quality mail order
catalogs. Orvis is known for handsome,
comfortable classic styles of clothing for
both men and women- great for travel.
Looking through the Orvis catalog you'll
see clothing described as "incredibly
wrinkle resistant," "crease resistant,"
"easy care," "machine wash"- cool, comfortable, travelers' delights. I especially
like the man's seersucker jacket Orvis is
now featuring as the "world's coolest
sportcoat." It's unstructured to keep you
cool and neat, is made of a new polycotton blend that's easy-care machinewash-and-dry, and looks great.
Orvis also sells its own brand of goodlooking practical luggage- Battenkill.

L.L. Bean
L.L. Bean's TVavelShirtdress is a simple classic cotton-polyester poplin that's
"supple, breathable, and resists wrinkling." It weighs only eight ounces and
is machine washable. Great for traveling. L.L. Bean is a tradition, and for
