American Museum of Natural History,
New York, NY: "Vijayanagara: Where
Kings and Gods Meet" (October 23, 1985January 26, 1986), is a unique photographic review of this ancient city in the
hills of southern India. Conceivedas a cosmic city 600 years ago, Vijayanagara was
the center of Hindu learning in the 16th
century and was knownthroughout Europe
for its beauty, wealth and power.Included
are maps and city plans, as well as period
sculpture. "Masterpieces of the American
West" (November 29, 1985-February 16,
1986), exhibits 100 paintings chronicling
the exploration, development and growth
of the American West, including work by
GeorgeCatlin, Asher B. Durand and Frederic Remington.
The Jewish Museum,NewYork,NY: "Jews
of India" (through February 15, 1986),
presents a rare glimpse of three Jewish
communities which have flourished in
India for more than 1000 years. Photographs and ceremonial objects document
how Indian Jews kept the traditions of
Judaism while adapting certain customs
and art forms from the Indian culture. Part
of the "Festival of India."
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New
York, NY: "India!" (through January 5,
1986),is a comprehensiveexhibition of the
art of India from the 14th to the 19th
century. Part of the nationwide "Festival
of India,"the collectionfeatures 400 works
in a wide variety of media, drawn from
India's great religious and secular traditions. Catalogue available. "Mimbres
Pottery: Ancient Art of the American
Southwest" (November19, 1985-February
2, 1986), is an outstanding collection of
125 examples of the art of the Mimbres
peoplewho lived in southwest New Mexico
betweenA.D.900through 1150.The painted
pottery bowls provide a glimpse into the
life, beliefs and artistic traditions of this
now extinct culture. "The Costumes of
Royal India" (December 16, 1985-August
31, 1986), presents court costumes, textiles, furniture, and jewelry of the 19th
and early 20th-century ruling families of
Baroda,Jaipur, Kashmir and other princely
states.
Montclair Art Museum, Montclair, NJ:
"Arctic Vision: Art of the Canadian Inuit"
(December 1-29, 1985),features 38 sculptures and 37 prints by contemporary Inuit
artists that capture the essenceof the Inuit
people and their methods of survival in an
inhospitable climate. Ancient artifacts are
included to illustrate the strong relationship between past and present. Catalogue

Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of
Design, Providence, RI: "The Art of the
Dogon: Selectionsfrom the Hans Guggenheim Collection" (through November 17,
1985),features sculpture, funerary objects,
architectural elements, and textiles of the

Dogon people of Mali, West Africa. "From
the TVeeWhere the Bark Grows: North
American Basket TVeasuresfrom the Peabody Museum" (November 29, 1985February 16, 1986), displays some of the
finest and rarest examples of Native
American baskets from the Harvard University collection. Primarily dating from
the 19th century, most of the 61 objects
have never before been exhibited. "Masterpieces of Indian Art" (through March
2, 1986), is an outstanding selection of
paintings, sculpture and textiles from the
Museum's collection, displayed as part of
the "Festival of India."
Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA: "Art
for Indian Rulers" (November 20, 1985February 9, 1986), explores Mediaeval
courtly life as expressed in Indian secular
painting. Consisting of approximately 100
paintings of Mughal and Rajput rulers,
courtiers and genre scenes, the works depict the more intimate and unusual
aspects of Indian life. Objects and implements like those in the paintings are displayed to underscore the show's theme.
Included are small jade, metal and glass
pieces, as well as jewelry and textiles.
Museum of Our National Heritage, Lexington, MA: "Childhood TVeasures"(December 15, 1985-May1986),examinestoys
that children from different periods of
American history have owned,played with
and cherished. One item is a child's trunk
filledwith dolls, clothing, shells, and other
trinkets that a little girl saved and assembled in the mid-19th century.
National Museum of Natural History,
Smithsonian Institution, Washington,DC:
"Gifts of Mother Earth: Ceramics in the
Zuni TVadition"(through Summer 1986),
features 90 bowls, jars, cooking pots and
vessels of the Zuni people of the Southwest. Collectedfor the Smithsonian in the
19th and early 20th century, the group
features a variety of canteens,many unique
and elaborately designed.
The NewarkMuseum, Newark,NJ: "TVeasures from the Collections" (through December 31, 1985), highlights a variety of
objects from the Museum's collection, including ethnographic, classical and Oriental art and 18th and 19th-century Chinese
export porcelains.
O.A.S. Building, Washington, DC:
"Comalapa: TVaditionsand Textiles" (November 26-December 31, 1985), features
100 handwoven textiles from the Guatemalan Indian town of Comalapa, known
for its bright red traditional blouses or
huípiles. The exhibit is from the Ixchel
Museum in Guatemala City. Catalogue

Peabody Museum of Archaeology and
Ethnology, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA: "Soft Gold: Captain Cook
Discoversthe Northwest Coast" (through
December31, 1985),documents the changing fur trade relations between Northwest
