from the 14th through the first half of the
16th century, a time when this city evolved
into one of Europe's important urban centers. "The Costumes of Royal India"
(through August 31, 1986),displays court
costumes, textiles, furniture, and jewelry
of the 19th and early 20th-century ruling
families of Baroda, Jaipur, Kashmir and
other princely states of India.
The Montclair Art Museum, Montclair,
NJ: "The Art of the Plains Indians"
(through July 31, 1986),includes enlarged
photographs of ledger book drawings by a
Kiowa chief at Fort Sill, OK, a's well as

Museum of American Folk Art, NewYork,
NY: "Liberties With Liberty" (through
May 18, 1986), celebrates the Statue of
Liberty Centennial with an examination
of the changing image of "Liberty," the
female figure wíiich has been the visual
symbol of the American spirit for over 400
years. Eighty-five objects in all media depict the evolving image from an Indian
queen to a Greek goddess, Columbia, and
finally the Statue of Liberty. Included are
paintings, needlework,sculpture, weathervanes, coverlets, engravings, and scrimshaw,illustrating an image whichhas dominated popular and folk art. Bookavailable.
Museum of Our National Heritage, Lexington, MA: "Patchwork History: American Quilts and Quilters" (through March
23, 1986), is a colorful collection of more
than 35 individual and community quilts
from the early 19th to the late 20th century. The lives of the quilters are recreated
through letters, diaries, paintings, photographs, and family stories. "Childhood
Treasures" (through June 15, 1986),celebrates the tradition of childhood toy collecting with cherished playthings from the
19th and 20th century. These objects hold
important clues to the past, revealing the
changing yet timeless experiencesof childhood. "The Great Deeds of Their Fathers:
100 Years of the Lexington Historical Society" (through October 5, 1986),features
documents and objects from the society's
remarkable collectionof Americana.
National Museum of Natural History,
SmithsonianInstitution, Washington,DC:
"Gifts of Mother Earth: Ceramics in the
Zuni Tradition" (through Summer 1986),
features 90 bowls, jars, cooking pots and
vessels of the Zuni people of the Southwest. Collectedfor the Smithsonian in the
19th and early 20th centuries, the group
features a variety of canteens, many unique
and elaborately designed.
The Newark Museum, Newark, NJ: "Indian Miniatures from the Ehrenfeld Collection" (April 4-May 26, 1986),presents
an overviewof the history of Indian miniature painting with more than 100 examples fromthe 16thto the mid-19thcenturies.

PA: "Painted Delight: 16th-19th Century

exhibition of 140 Mughal and Rajput
Indian miniature paintings representing
three centuries of work by numerous

Curses and Curiosities from the Curator's

a variety of ancient objects from the Near

these mystery objects. "Yemen: Early
Sightings and Soundings- Work in Progress" (through April 4, 1986),is part of a
preservation and research project to find
and preserve early visual documentation
of the MiddleEast. Included are rare 19thcentury photographs of Yemen taken in
1856by Auguste Bartholdi, the creator of
the Statue of Liberty.

"Fukasa from the Shojiro Nomura Collection" (through March 23, 1986),is an exhibition of Japanese fukasa from the Edo
period, 1615-1867.These elaborately embroidered and painted textiles were used

acquisitions, including Bolivian Indian
