American Museum of Natural History,
New York, NY: "Dark Caves, Bright Visions: Life in Ice Age Europe" (through
January 31, 1987), presents the largest
collection of original Upper Palaeolithic
artifacts ever assembledfor study and display.Over300artifacts including 100portable art objects, tools and the earliest
knownmusical instruments and calendars
illustrate the technologicaland artistic advances made by humans ca. 35,000 to
10,000years ago. Highlightedis the "Venus
of Lespugue,"a mammoth-ivoryfemalefigurine from the Musée des Antiquités
Nationales in France, where it is considered a national treasure. Catalogue available. "Ladies in the Field: The Museum's
Unsung Explorers" (through April 1987),
documents the contributions women explorers have made in the development of
science and the American Museum.
Haffenfeffer Museum of Anthropology,
Bristol, RI: "Arts of Africa" (through
March 1987), features textiles and artifacts from the Guinea Coast, Sierra Leone,
Nigeria and Upper Volta. "Curator's
Choice" (through March 1987), presents
costumes, artifacts and textiles from
Micronesia,Polynesia,Oceania,Africa and
China. "Northern Plains and Plateau Hide
Clothing and Beadwork"(through March
1997), displays 29 pieces from the William
Drayton Collection,1890-1940."Southeast
Asian Folkart" (through March 1987),
highlights Laotian Hmong embroidery,
appliqué and basketry, and a Buddhist
altar from Thailand. "Peoples in Contact:
Europeans and Indians in the Seventeenth
Century" (through September 1987), exhibits archaeologicalevidenceand analytical techniquesexploringinter-grouptrade,
using indoor and outdoor displays.
The Jewish Museum, New York, NY:
"Among Ancient Empires: Recent Excavations in Emeq Hefer, Israel" (through
March 22, 1987),features results of ongoing excavations undertaken by the Emeq
Hefer (Alexander River Valley) Archaeological Research Project. This regional
project focuseson sites in the coastal plain
north of TelAviv,particularly Tellel-Ifshar
and Tel Mikhmoret. Featured are objects
reflecting foreign influences and the extensive trade and exchange networks of
Israel beginning ca. 2000 B.C. "The Jews
of Ethiopia: A People in Transition"
(through April 19, 1987), focuses on the
origins and history of this little known
group traditionally called Beta Israel or
Falashas. "Art and Exaltation: Treasures
from the Jewish Museum" (through August 1987),presents nearly ninety works
illuminating the Jewish experience
through the ages, includingceremonialart,
paintings, numismatics and manuscripts
from the museum's permanent collection.
The material ranges from a first-century
Roman tombstone to the 20th-century art
of George Segal.
Museum of Our National Heritage, Lexington, MA: "Impact: Technologyin the

Kitchen" (through February 15, 1987),
shows the evolution of American kitchens
through innovations in tools and design,
with material dating from 1830. "Alarm
Clocks from the Museum Collection"
(through May 31, 1987),traces their development over the course of three centuries
from their European origins to adaptation
in America. "Magic Lanterns" (February
15-October 18, 1987),explores the history
of the magic lantern from its invention in
1646 to its decline in the 1920s.
National Gallery of Art, Washington,DC:
"American Furniture from the Kaufman
Collection" (through April 19, 1987), exhibits more than 100examplesdating from
the pre-Revolutionaryperiod to the mid19th century.
PhiladelphiaMuseumof Art, Philadelphia,
PA: "AfricanArt from the University Museum" (through February 8, 1987), is a
selectionof 89 sculptures, masks and other
objects of ceremonial and everyday use,
from the collection of the University Museum of Archaeology/Anthropologyof the
University of Pennsylvania, celebrating
that institution's 100th anniversary.Many
of the objects are from West Africa. Catalogue available.
Queens Historical Society, Flushing, NY:
"The Past in Our Presence"(through February 1, 1987),is a panoramicviewof more
than 70 photographs and drawings of outstanding historic structures in New York
City built between 1661-1930,from small
farmhouses to elegant mansions.
The University Museum of Archaeology/
Anthropology, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA: "Tikal" (through
July 31, 1987),examines the monumental
architecture of this capital city of the ancient Maya in Guatemala. Large-scalephotographs illustrate how the architectural
elements reflected political changes. Featured are a scale model of the Great Plaza
and photographs of the museum's historic
excavations.
Worcester Art Museum, Worcester, MA:
"Tale of Genji" (February 17-March 19,
1987), reflects the narrative tradition in
classicalJapanese literature as interpreted
by printmakers in the woodblock of the
Edo period (1615-1868). Featured are
works relating to The Tale of the Genji
and The Tales of I se.
Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven,
CT: "Gifts to Osiris: Ancient Egyptian
Art at Yale"(February 18-April 19, 1987),
features more than 100 objects, ranging
from the Neolithic through Roman periods, including stone, wood and bronze
sculpture, painting, jewelry and tomb
equipment. Many of the artifacts were
excavated from the temple complex at
Abydos, with some objects on exhibit for
the first time. Catalogue available.
MIDWEST
The Art Institute of Chicago,Chicago,IL:
"Art from the Fertile Crescent: Masterpieces from the Oriental Institute Museum" (through February 22, 1987), is a

selection of 25 ancient objects from the
Near East and Egypt, includingsculpture,
seals and architectural fragments. "The
Classical Collection: Early Accessions"
(through February 1987),features the earliest works collected by the institute, including Roman marble heads, terracotta
lamps and Greek vases. The Egyptian
holdings are highlighted.
Cincinnati Art Museum, Cincinnati, OH:
"Ebla to Damascus: Art and Archaeology
of Ancient Syria" (through January 18,
1987), presents nearly 300 examples of
statuary, inscriptions, mosaics, jewelry
and other artifacts dating as far back as
8,000 B.C.,culled from archaeologicaldiscoveries of the past 50 years. (See ARCHAEOLOGY,

"Ancient Eskimo Ivories of the Bering

Shreve Collection of Chinese Jade"
(through March 1, 1987),consists of approximately 70 objects of Chinese jade.
The works, which date primarily from the
Qing dynasty (1644-1912),feature statues,
bowls, table screens, sword fittings, jewelry and writing implements. Circulated

exhibit of Chinese green glazed ceramics,
