Makes a Man" (through November 7,
1987), features the work of Edgar Heapof-Birds, Cheyenne Arapahoe contemporary artist, whose work relates on Indian
manhood today. "Christmas Sale" (December 1, 1987-January 1, 1988). "Iroquois
Contemporary Art" (January 8-February
12, 1988),presents paintings, stone carvings and prints relating to traditional and
modern life.
American Museum of Natural History,
New York, NY: "Ancient Eskimo Ivories
of the Bering Strait" (through January 3,
1988),presents more than 160historic ivories discoveredin the past 60 years in the
Bering Strait sites of St. LawrenceIsland,
the Chukchi Peninsula in Siberia and in

The Asia Society, New York, NY: "The
Chinese Scholar's Studio: Artistic Life in
the Late Ming Period" (through January
3, 1988), focuses on six great scholarartists who were at the center of the Chinese art world in the early 17th century.
Boston Museum of Science, Boston, MA:
"TribalTraditionsof Kenya"(through February 28, 1987), features Kenyan artifacts
including clothing, jewelry, pottery and
woodcarvings. Focusing on the Pokot
tribe, the show also captures the culture
of 22 other East African peoples.
The Carnegie Museum of Natural History
Gallery, Pittsburgh, PA: "Pieces of the
Past: Archaeology in Pittsburgh"
(through June 1988),exhibits the work of
craftspeople of mid-19th-century Pittsburgh. Through the display of artifacts excavated from severaldowntownPittsburgh
construction sites, this exhibit gives an
overviewof not only Pittsburgh's history,
but of various methods of urban archaeology as well.
The Center for AfricanArt, NewYork,NY:
"Perspectives: New Angles on African
Art" (through January 3, 1988), spans
2,000 years of African art, with works
ranging from rare archaeologicalfinds to
20th-century neo-traditional sculpture.
Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology,
Brown University, Bristol, RI: "Archaeological Artifacts from Peru and Central
America"(through December 1987)."Costume as Communication: Ethnographic
Costumes and Textilesfrom MiddleAmerica and the Central Andes of South America" (through December 1987), explores
the traditional dress of the native peoples
of Mexico, Guatemala and the Andes of
Boliviaand Peru. "Feather Headdresses of
the Cashinahua of Eastern Peru" (through
December 1987). "The Plains Indian Family" (through December 1987), features
costumes, toys and utensils from the late
19th century.

Lockwood Library, State University of
New York at Buffalo, Buffalo, NY:
"Among Ancient Empires" (through November 30, 1987), presents 23 artifacts
found on an archaeological site in Emeq
Hefer, Israel between 1980and 1984.The
artifacts, consisting of a pull toy, pottery,
amulets, and figurines, reflect Assyrian,
Babylonian, Canaanite, Egyptian, Greek,
Persian, Roman and Syrian cultures during the MiddleBronzeIIA period(ca. 2000
B.C.-324A.D.).Catalogue available.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New
York, NY: "Ancient Art in Miniature"
(through January 10, 1988),is a selection
of 90 stamp and cylinder seals dating from
6000 B.C.to the 4th century B.C.,from regions ranging from Syria and Anatolia, to
Bactria. "Antiquities from the Collection
of Christos C. Bastis" (November 24,
1987-January10, 1988),exhibits about 150
Egyptian, Cycladic,Greek, Etruscan, and
Roman objects. Specially highlighted
pieces include Egyptian sculpture, Classical bronzes, Attic vases, and Greek jewelry. Catalogue available. "Images of the
Mind" (through January 10, 1988), displays 70 Chinese paintings and calligraphy spanning four dynasties: Sung, Yuan,
Ming and Ching (llth-18th centuries).
Catalogue available. "TViumphsof American Silvermaking" (through January 10,
1988),consists of 20 objects of silver and
gold made by Tiffany & Co. between the
1850s and ca. 1900. "The Age of Sultan
Süleyman the Magnificent"(through January 17, 1988),presents the aesthetic and
technical achievements of the Ottoman
Empire during the rule of Sultan Süleyman I (A.D. 1520-66). Featured are 200
worksof art includingpaintings, sculpture,
decorative arts, jewelry,ceramics, carpets
and armor. "Houses of the Hereafter, Funerary Temples from Guerrero, Mexico"
(through January 17, 1988), features 80
stone sculptures of temples or houses from
the Mezcala region, dated to ca. 10th to
15th centuries A.D.
Montclair Art Museum, Montclair, NJ:
"Song of the Loom: New Traditions in
Navajo Weaving" (through November22,
1987),features some 60 Navajo rugs and
wall-hangings from the past 25 years, focusing on the ceremonial Chant Weaves
which present a rare, permanent record of
Navajo ritual art. "Highlights from the
American Indian Collection" (through
June 30, 1988),includes baskets, jewelry,
clothing, and pottery from the museum's
collection.
The Museumof the AmericanIndian, New
York, NY: "Gift of Double Woman: Quillwork of the Lakota" (through December
21, 1987),features examples of traditional
contemporary quillwork. "I Need No
Blanket: Hide Robes of the American Indian" (through December 31, 1987),illustrates the variety of styles and uses of
painted buffalo and other hides made by
the people of the Great Plains.
RenwickGallery of the National Museum
of AmericanArt, Smithsonian Institution,
Washington, DC: "Lost and Found
Traditions: Native American Art
1965-1985" (through March 6, 1988),
stresses the survival of Native American
art forms to the present day. Over 300
works by more than 200 artists willbe featured, including textiles, pottery and bas-
