here revealed extensive remains
from various periods, a melange of
artifacts spanning more than 19
centuries. These include ancient
Roman ruins, such as roads and

the 18th century, that reflect the

Archaeologists have uncovered a
Palaeolithic cave near the banks of
the River Meuse, which runs along
the Belgian-French border. The
cave dates to 130,000 b.c. and has
well-preserved decorative murals of
animals, tools, and various other objects. Gettingthere: take a train from
Namur or Liège to Andenne, then
change to Sclaigneaux. No appointment necessary to visit the site;
restaurants in the village. Volunteers with experience accepted.

Amphora-Sallèles d'Aude (excavations July 15-August 15). Located near Narbonne, once the capital of the Roman "Province," and
its vineyards, this site is a GalloRoman pottery complex that is the
best-preserved amphora factory in
