Parthenon Restorershave dismantled the north and south walls of the Parthenon's interior chamberyor cella, in an attempt to rearrange some 300 blocks that were put up in a rather arbitrary fashion during a nineteenthcentury restoration. ArchitectNicholas Toganidesis relying on a computerprogram to help him determinethe correct position of these blocks as well as some400 fragments found scattered nearby. The program can evaluate 49 characteristics of complete blocks, includingdimension and positioning of the original iron clamps. Because blockfragments are difficult for the program to assess, solutions offered by the computerare not always helpful. i s gj I 50 Archaeology
