We received a number of letters regarding
"After the Battle" (May/June 2017), by
senior editor Daniel Weiss, from readers who
expressed a personal connection to the story.
I thought you might be interested in the
legacy of one member of the "lost Scottish army" in your excellent article. In
researching my family history, I discovered Duncan Stewart, a Scottish soldier,
captured by Cromwell at the Battle of
Dunbar, marched to Durham, held at
the Cathedral, sent to London, shipped
on the Unity, and sold to George Hadley,
a farmer in what is now Ipswich, Massachusetts. He was one of the lucky ones.
Duncan, a respected Puritan, eventually married a servant in the house, Anne
Winchester (or Winchurst), bought his
own farm, raised 11 children, and held
several town offices. His was one of the
seven families who founded the new
parish of Byfield, in northeastern Massachusetts. Both Duncan and his wife
lived into their 90s and are buried in
Rowley, Massachusetts. They have many
descendants in New England today. They
are my seventh great-grandparents.

that Duncan must have been one of the
hardier ones to survive all that he went
through. I regret that I cannot know his
thoughts about his new life and about
the ultimate return of a Stewart to the
throne of England, and what memories
and homesickness he might have had.

who were already in America in the early
1700s that I haven't been able to trace
back across the ocean. I don't suppose
there exists a list (or partial list) of names
of the Scotsmen from that battle who
came over here?

We love your magazine and the recent
article on the Scottish army. My wife
is from Maine and her mother's maiden name is White. Her relatives are
from southern Maine, where the name
was originally spelled Hwite. They are
believed to have come over as indentured servants in the 1600s. The family
was always in the lumber business.
Recently we had our DNA analyzed and
hers was 97 percent from the British
Isles and mostly the Dunbar/York area.
We want to investigate and see if there
is a list of those that came over in 1650
and 1651.

I was fascinated to read, in my favorite
magazine, the story of the Scottish prisoners sent to southern Maine. My family
has been in that area since between 1650
and 1670 and is well documented. The
problem is that we have never been able
to ascertain exactly when our ancestors
arrived. We intermarried several times
with the McIntire family, whose family
home you pictured in your article. In
our family history there is mention of
a possible Scottish connection, but we
never knew if that was the case or if we
are English. I would like to know if there
was a list of the prisoners on board the
Unity. By the way, there is also mention
in the family history of a Francis Came
who was banished to Barbados for high
treason, but died on the voyage.

of the story. Descendants of these men
have compiled a list, based on various
records, of the surviving Scotsmen who
were sent to North America after the
