Dörpfeld
Wilhelm Dörpfeld
was a German archaeologist
and architect
who excavated
at Hisarlik in the
1880s. Dörpfeld first
worked with Heinrich
Schliemann at the site and is noted for
bringing structure and a systematic
approach to the excavating process.
This approach included excavating one
layer at a time (stratigraphy) and careful
documentation of his finds. One of
Dörpfeld's major accomplishments was
the mapping of all nine settlements of
the ancient city of Troy at Hisarlik.
Dörpfeld was motivated by his belief
that Hisarlik was the site of the Trojan
War, as described by Homer in the Iliad.
He felt that Level VI was the site of Troy
during the war, but later scholars have
disagreed with this identification.
In addition to his excavation at
Hisarlik, Dörpfeld is known for his work
at Athens, Mycenae, and other Bronze
Age sites. Some of his most important
discoveries at Troy include:
* the west side of the Citadel
* the Bouleuterion
* The Odeion
* City wall's circuit
