Uncovering Troy - 15
CARL BLEGEN
Carl Blegen
Blegen
was an American archaeologist and
professor of Classical Archaeology at the
University of Cincinnati from 1927 to
1957. He excavated at Troy between 1932
and 1938. Blegen's research interest at
Troy was to find evidence that would shed
as much light as possible on the successive
settlements during the Bronze Age.
Blegen's team at Troy discovered that there were actually
46 phases of building, destruction, and reconstruction
at the site. He also identified that Troy VIIa was the more
likely level for Homeric Troy, due to the evidence of warfare
and destruction found there. Blegen published extensively
about his work at Troy, producing four volumes in the
1950s and monographs in the 1960s.
Some of Blegen's most important discoveries at Troy
include:
* the West Sanctuary
* early Christian Church with mosaics
* stone-paved circles
* coins and terra cotta figurines
