Manfred
Korfmann
was a German
archaeologist, and, in
1982 became Professor
of Prehistoric
Archaeology at the
University of Tübingen.
In 1987, Korfmann gained permission
from the Turkish Ministry of
Culture to start a new series of excavations
at Troy. He did this in partnership
with the University of Cincinnati,
dividing the research between Bronze
Age (Tübingen) and post-Bronze Age
(Cincinnati) periods.
Some of Korfmann's most important
discoveries at Troy include:
* through the use of a geomagnetic
survey and sampling, it became clear
that Troy was much larger than first
thought
* the first evidence for writing in
Bronze Age Troy (the Luwian bronze
seal)
* the rock-cut palisade of Troy II
(Early Bronze Age) date
* the rock-cut fortification ditch of
Troy VI and VII (Late Bronze
Age) date
Rose
C. Brian Rose
is the American
archaeologist who led
the post-Bronze Age
Troy excavations on
behalf of the University
of Cincinnati from
1988 to 2012. He is
currently James B. Pritchard Professor
of Mediterranean Archaeology at the
University of Pennsylvania. Rose is
also director of excavations in Gordion
(Turkey) and Head of the Post-Bronze
Age excavations at Troy.
