ARCHAEOLOGY, TECHNOLOGY, AND TROY
1
For many years, the only way that archaeologists could find and
examine what lay below Earth's surface was by digging. By definition,
that process destroys the integrity of the site. This is why archaeologists
have to be extremely careful in mapping and recording what they
do: grid by grid on the surface, as well as layer by layer through the
sub-surface. Each artifact or structure
has to be faithfully logged to be able to
establish the context of the find.
In the 1980s, when Manfred Korfmann
was excavating at the site of Troy
with Brian Rose and other colleagues,
he used new, remote-sensing techniques
to locate the most potentially productive
areas for excavation. These techniques,
magnetometry and ground-penetrating
radar (GPR), provided data indicating
that the site of Troy was much larger
that had been thought. This find helped
to support the theory that Troy was of
greater stature in the ancient world
than had first been conjectured. It was
of a size to serve as a major trading
partner, as well as a city worth fighting
for in combat.
Ground-penetrating radar uses a
device that sends high frequency electromagnetic
pulses into the substrate.
