TROY OVER THE MILLENNIA
Troy VIII is the Greek Ilion. During this time, the
Greeks, in a variety of ways, sought to strengthen
their ties to Homeric Troy. One example of this was
a huge bronze horse showing Greek soldiers inside
that was built close to the Parthenon in Athens.
The metope of the sun god Helios pictured here
decorated the Temple of Athena built by the Greeks
on the site of Troy. In 480 B.C., Xerxes of Persia
visited Troy and made a sacrifi ce of 1,000 oxen.
Later, in 334 B.C., Alexander the Great also visited
Troy and sacrifi ced to the Homeric heroes. Alexander
decided to construct a temple to Athena, which
was eventually completed 150 years later. Much
of Troy, in fact, was rebuilt with a Bouleuterion
(town hall), and other civic structures that served a
population of approximately 8,000.
