The Archaeological Site of Troy
was added to the list of UNESCO World
Heritage Sites on December 2, 1998.
The site was chosen for its " exceptional
universal value " due to its 4,000-yearold
history of interactions between Near
Eastern and Mediterranean cultures.
Troy's location, which is close to the
southern entrance of the Dardanelles
in what is now northwest Turkey, is significant
as a meeting place between the
Balkans, the Aegean, and Asia Minor.
At the site, one can see the remains of
the Bronze Age (ca. 3,000 - 1,000 B.C.)
citadel enclosing palaces and other
buildings, as well as a lower city and its
fortifications. There are also well-preserved
remains of the later Greek and
Roman periods of the city.
Troy was also selected as a
UNESCO Heritage Site for the immense
and long-lasting influence on Western
Civilization of the Troy-related epics
the Iliad, the Odyssey (Homer), and the
Aeneid (Virgil).
