RENEE L.G. KOFFEND,
AUD, CCC-A
WORK SETTING: Private Practice, owner of
Guam Hearing Doctors
YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: 28
What do you love most about your job?
Helping people hear better! I get to witness, observe, and hear stories of
patients performing better in social and professional settings. I get to see
children meet communication and speech-language milestones. And another
perk! I get invited to 1st birthday and 80th birthday parties.
How do ASHA Professional Development (APD) courses help you
tackle your work challenges?
Living on Guam, so far away from the mainland, limits my access to continuing
education at a reasonable price. I can obtain meaningful ASHA CEUs from
home...Online learning is perfect.
Another challenge is limited access to colleagues for advice, guidance, and
clinical support. For instance, I had a pediatric patient with progressive hearing
loss. I had no recent, practical experience with cochlear implants. I participated
in ASHA's Grand Rounds Cochlear Implant Candidacy Online Conference
(see page 11). Best ever! I was able to provide useful, up-to-date information
to my patient's family, pediatrician, and ENT. My pediatric patient was able to
go off island for bilateral cochlear implants. Being aware of updated implant
candidacy promoted timely implantation.
How would you describe your online learning experience with APD?
I love it! The experience is equal to, if not better than, a live conference
or session. I can be at home or at my office. I can wear my pajamas. And
since we are a different time zone, I have the flexibility of taking it when
I can. Best of all, I'm not away from my new business that needs me.
What do you enjoy doing when you're not running your business?
Day-to-day, I enjoy good food, a glass of wine, happy hour with
friends, and dinner with my 80-year-old mother. I love to travel.
My daughter and I have spent the last three summers
travelling Asia. Because of APD, I have time to travel
leisurely with my family instead of traveling
to a conference.
