Audiology Practice
and Curriculum
Analysis
THOMAS R. ZALEWSKI,
PHD, CCC-A
WORK SETTING: Professor of Audiology,
Bloomsburg University
YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: 31
What led you to a career in audiology?
I first became aware of audiology while
in high school after completing an
interest survey to guide future career
paths. However, there were also some
underlying personal experiences. My
father had a hearing loss, so I personally
experienced the difficulties hearing loss
places on the family unit. In addition, my
mother had chronic middle ear issues as
a child and still experiences periods of
dizziness due to continued middle ear
issues and sinus problems.
What do you love most about being
an audiologist?
As an educator, it is great to see the "ahha" moment, when students understand
how theory applies clinically. It is always
nice to see former students say they still
remember the content that I taught and/
or now they understand the importance
of it.
As a clinician, it is great to see when
people understand why they are having
difficulties and I am able to reduce and
even at times resolve their difficulties.
I know I met the patient's needs when
I hear, "I was told you are the person to
see for this problem."
How do ASHA Professional
Development (APD) courses help you
tackle your challenges at work?
As a clinician and educator it is important
to stay current, but it can be a struggle to
find the time. I like the flexibility to listen,
watch, and read APD course information
when it fits into my schedule.

A practice analysis is the primary
mechanism for describing the tasks
or clinical activities, knowledge,
and skills underlying the practice
of audiology. The results of
this analysis establish the job
relevance of decisions concerning
standards, curriculum redesign, and
professional certification.
This product is essential for
academic programs, state
associations, and licensure boards
to validate that their curriculum and
regulations are consistent with the
knowledge and skills required for
ASHA certification, which measures
a practitioner's readiness for entrylevel independent practice. It will
help you do the following:
* define the performance domain
for audiology
* identify the clinical activities and
knowledge areas important for
entry-level professionals
* modify your program's curriculum
to provide opportunities for
students to achieve the identified
knowledge and skills for
professional practice.
