Assessment Tools From ASHA Functional Assessment of Communication Skills for Adults (ASHA FACS) Carol M. Frattali, PhD, Cynthia K. Thompson, PhD, Audrey L. Holland, PhD, Cheryl Wohl, and Michelle Ferketic, MA 87 The ASHA FACS is used to measure and record the functional communication of adults with speech, language, and cognitive communication disorders. This resource has been found to be a reliable, valid, and sensitive measure with two populations: adults with aphasia resulting from left hemisphere stroke and adults with cognitive communication disorders resulting from traumatic brain injury. The measure comprises 43 items that assess functional communication in four areas; social communication; communication of basic needs; reading, writing, and number concepts; and daily planning. Includes a 118-page manual, a CD version to help you automatically tabulate the measures, a hard copy version of the measure with score summary and profile forms, a rating key (updated in 2003), an index of ICD-9-CM codes on CD, and a 2004 addendum extending validation with other cultural groups and patient populations. Thompson, PhD, Carol J. Caperton, and Sarah C. Slater This product emerged from a widespread need for a reliable and valid instrument designed specifically for assessing the quality of communication life for adults with communication disorders. Quality of communication life can be defined as the extent to which a person’s communication acts, as constrained within the boundaries drawn by personal and environmental factors, and as filtered through his or her own perspective, allow meaningful participation in life situations. The life scale captures information about the impact of a communication disorder on an adult’s relationships; communication; interactions; participation in social, leisure, work, and education activities; and overall quality of life. This product is intended to provide information about the psychosocial, vocational, and educational effects of having a communication impairment. It can be used to assist with treatment planning, prioritization of goals, counseling, and documentation of outcomes.
