SLPs sometimes feel uncomfortable
initiating and participating in difficult
conversations involving students,
patients, families, colleagues,
supervisees, and administrators. This
presentation will explain how to establish
rapport with conversational partners,
how to foster effective interpersonal
behaviors, and strategies to improve the
interactions.  Included are a four-step
process for increasing the probability of
a positive outcome, outcome mapping,
motivational interviewing strategies,
and a master class/coaching session for
attendees led by experts in handling
difficult conversations.

This session is a clinically focused
presentation on the Rapid Syllable
Transition Treatment (ReST), an evidence
based treatment for children aged 4‑13
with Childhood Apraxia of Speech. We
will canvass the range of treatments for
CAS which have evidence, how ReST was
designed and tested, and how to do ReST
therapy. Video of three clinicians doing
the treatment with a range of children
will be included. Problem solving and
questions will conclude the session.

This session explores perspectives of
people with dysarthria associated with
Parkinson's disease by interviewing
them before and after speech treatment.
Comments were generally positive,
suggesting increased awareness
and improved loudness. Areas of
dissatisfaction with treatment included
treatment not addressing some
communication problems that were of
concern, therapy programs not being
enjoyable, and difficulty maintaining
gains after therapy ended. Principles of
self‑management may address some
gaps in current treatment approaches
and will be reviewed.

many challenges to the school‑based
speech‑language pathologist. The oral
presentation aims to guide the school‑
based clinician to implement evidence‑
based practices in the assessment of
bilingual students. Case studies and
videos of students from various cultural
and linguistic backgrounds will be
used to exemplify various assessment
procedures. Resources will be provided.
