that are complex and more complicated

impaired students. The purpose of this
presentation is first to identify these
challenges and how they impact learning.

essential for effective therapy, determine
what treatment approach or approaches
best fit in addressing these challenges
and develop a realistic treatment plan
that meets these needs.

individuals with underlying genetic
diagnoses. Velopharyngeal dysfunction is
a common feature of a number of genetic
syndromes which impact craniofacial
development. This session will review
common genetic disorders and their
impact on speech production and
velopharyngeal function.

Despite claims that we live in a "post‑
racial America," recognizing race and
cultural‑linguistic differences is critical in
becoming culturally‑competent clinicians.
Within this interactive presentation, we
will review key terminology related to
race and ethnicity, highlighting how
these constructs are intricately tied to
communication practices and personal
identity. We will also highlight from our
own practice how failing to recognize
cultural‑linguistic differences limits clinical
effectiveness, and we exemplify several
practical recommendations for becoming
cultural‑competent clinicians.

A survey of California SLPs was performed
to obtain information on their training to
collaborate with, experiences with, and
opinions of I/Ts. Findings indicated that:
(a) Most SLPs had had instruction about
collaborating with I/Ts; (b) Generally,
SLPs were satisfied with the quality of
interpretation/translation; but (c) Most of
the SLPs had had to work with family or
family friends at some point.

is emerging as the expected standard
of care for individuals with mild to
moderate cognitive impairment, with a
growing body of evidence supporting
the involvement of multiple perspectives
in the pursuit of client‑centered care.
With the understanding that no single
profession is responsible for cognition,
our interdisciplinary assessment
and treatment approach utilizes the
unique expertise of each discipline
to best facilitate improvements in
functional performance.
