The implementation of the Every Student
Succeeds Act (ESSA) implores the
expertise of SLPs in their newly titled
role of Specialized Instructional Support
Personnel. ESSA also places an emphasis
on increasing STEAM education initiatives
especially with students who are at‑risk.
Implications and value-added benefits for
providing interventions within a STEAM
context are discussed. Sample activities
will be demonstrated and the need for
evidence‑based interventions in this area
is highlighted.

Speech‑language pathologists (SLPs)
foster vocabulary development by
embedding evidence‑based practices
within a broad range of therapy activities.
Learn two approaches for selecting
vocabulary target words and eight
ways for explicitly teaching vocabulary
words. In addition, SLPs will learn four
morphological interventions and hands‑
on activities for prefixes, suffixes and root
words. 20+ "ready‑to‑use" (morphology)
therapy activities will be reviewed and
discussed. Applying these evidence‑
based interventions will offer clinicians
a working framework to enhance
vocabulary development.

We conducted five focus groups
(four including stroke survivors and/
or caregivers, one including hospital
administrators and clinicians) to identify
access barriers to outpatient rehabilitative
care after stroke. The results were
organized into two main groupings:
financial and non-financial barriers.
In this presentation, we will discuss
implications and potential solutions
for speech‑language pathologists to
address these barriers. We will also
explore potential facilitators to accessing
outpatient therapy for stroke survivors
and their caregivers.

Stimulation Program: Lessons Learned

implementation of an evidence‑based
cognitive stimulation program. Thirty
individuals at risk for mild cognitive
impairment participated in a ten‑week
program. Structure and content as well as
examples of strategies and activities for
clinical implementation will be reviewed.
Feedback from participants and clinicians
will be discussed.

Parent‑Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)
can be adapted as an effective language
intervention for children with hearing
loss. PCIT incorporates live coaching to
systematically target parent language
input. In parent‑facilitated treatment,
a change in parent behavior is a
prerequisite for child success. A study
of PCIT for children with hearing loss
revealed significant changes in parent
engagement, and increases in child
utterances. Techniques to effectively
promote change in parent language input
will be discussed and demonstrated.
