Flash Sessions * Friday (30 Minutes)
(formerly Technical Sessions)

Flash Sessions, formerly known as Technical Clinical Sessions and Technical Research Sessions, highlight clinical innovations/
practices or research updates in an efficient format. A Flash Session is a 20-minute oral presentation that focuses on either
(a) applied clinical aspects of our professions (e.g., the "how-to" of a specific diagnostic or therapeutic strategy or unique
service delivery model) or (b) recent research findings or research in progress. The oral presentation is followed by a brief
10‑minute question‑and‑answer period, allowing the presenter to clarify information and foster discussion among the audience.

This study explored the experiences and perceptions of
People with Parkinson's (PWP) and speech-language
therapy (SLT) students involved in the "Expert Teacher"
clinic. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with
PWP and a focus group with students. Data were analysed
using thematic analysis. Four themes emerged from the
student data and five themes for the Expert Teachers.
Findings suggest the "Expert Teacher" clinical model offers
significant value to SLT education, supporting student and
clients' needs.

A 72-year-old client with aphasia regularly attends a
university aphasia group and community stroke support
group. Through these groups, and during individual
intervention, he was encouraged to share his recovery story
with other stroke survivors. He has effectively become an
aphasia ambassador by sharing his story and inspiring
others in his community. A documentary of his story is
being created by the university television channel, which
will be used to further promote aphasia advocacy.

In Australia, speech-language pathology students have
limited opportunities to develop consistent stuttering
management skills. This study over two stages aimed to
investigate students' 1) perceptions of their knowledge,
skills and confidence in stuttering management, and 2)
competency outcomes following participation in simulated
learning activities. Stage one results indicated increased
confidence, knowledge and skills. Stage two results are
being finalised. This study may strengthen understanding
of the role of simulation in development of stuttering
management skills.

Effect of Fatigue
in Children with
Vestibular Loss:
Preliminary Findings

Children with cochlear-implants-and-vestibular loss
(CCI-VL) exhibit functional impact (e.g., reduced visual
acuity), however it is unknown if they experience increased
fatigue to perform daily activities. In this study, the
relationship between VL and perceptual and performancebased fatigue in CCI was evaluated. Results showed that
CCI-VL had significantly higher fatigue (p=0.003) at the
end of the school day in comparison to CCI without VL.
Additional pilot data is upcoming and will contribute
to findings.

hearing loss and TORCH infections, but how well do you
know the "C", or Cytomegalovirus (CMV)? Congenital CMV
infection is the leading non-genetic cause of hearing loss
in children and the leading viral cause of developmental
disabilities. There is national "buzz" about Zika, but CMV is
much more common affecting thousands of children each
year. Come learn what audiologists need to know about
CMV.
