ASHA NeWS
Student Ethics Essay Winner
Attends Convention
Christine Delfino, a second-year
graduate student in speech-language
pathology at Arizona State University,
attended ASHA's 2014 Convention
as the first-place winner of the 2014
Student Ethics Essay Award. "It was a
rewarding and enriching experience to
examine the Code of Ethics in greater
detail, and I encourage graduate
students to enter the contest," she
writes in a post on ASHAsphere that
describes the essay contest and her
convention experience (on.asha.org/
first-convention).
Delfino was able to attend
convention in part because of her
essay-the first-place winner receives
$750 and a complimentary student
registration to that year's convention.
Second- and third-place finishers
receive $500 and $250, respectively.
Access Academics Looks
at Quality Indicators 2.0
All winners receive a one-year
membership to the National Student
Speech Language Hearing Association
and other awards and recognition.
"I wasn't prepared for just how
amazing my first ASHA convention
experience was going to be," Delfino
writes.
ASHA invites communication
sciences and disorders students-
enrolled in any undergraduate,
post-baccalaureate or entry-level
graduate program-to enter the
2015 ethics essay competition, which
explores the ethical considerations of
confidentiality. Students must submit
their entries to their program directors
(not to ASHA) by April 10.

requirements and program details at

Check out the February issue of
Access Academics & Research,
which examines a new version of
a self-assessment tool designed
to help academic and clinical
programs integrate research and
clinical practice.
Featured author Jayne Brandel,
chair of the Department of
Communication Disorders at
Fort Hays State University in
Hays, Kansas, discusses updates
and refinements to the "Quality
Indicators for Integrating Research
and Clinical Practice
in Communication Sciences
and Disorders Programs" (on.asha.
org/assess-qi)
As a participant in all phases of
the three-year project to update
the quality indicators-originally
published in 2006-Brandel shares
her perspective about the new
QIs as well as her department's
experiences in implementing this
tool. Froma Roth, ASHA associate
director of academic affairs and
research education, provides
information about the genesis of
this self-assessment instrument.
