platelet plug; upon damage to the
vascular wall, platelets underwent
a series of events: adhesion, aggregation,
release of granule content,
and morphological changes. We are
now learning more about the diverse
function of platelets and their heterogeneous
effects beyond hemostasis.
A proper understanding of the

biology and clinical presentation of
inherited and acquired platelet disorders
is essential in order to provide
appropriate treatment for patients.
Oftentimes this may be challenging
since many of these conditions are
relatively rare. The “Platelet Drugs

team, it is my pleasure to welcome
you to the 53rd Annual Meeting
in San Diego. We are delighted to
provide you with daily updates on
all aspects of the meeting. You can
pick up the meeting newspaper at
the entrance and other locations
throughout the convention center,
outside your door at select hotels,
and on shuttle buses, or view it online
from your computer or smartphone.
This year, the newspaper is
made up of three sections. Section
A consists of articles that will report
on the educational and scientific
sessions, honorary lectures and
awards, and coverage of the plenary
lectures. Section B is made up
of Society news and special pieces
to help make your trip to San Diego
more enjoyable, and Section C
includes the exhibit hall map and a
list of exhibitors, maps of the convention
center and the Manchester

Hyatt and Marriott Marquis, as well
as additional tourist information.
The Education Program sessions
remain the heart of the meeting and
are not to be missed – many sessions
will be highlighted in ASH News
Daily, some articles previewing the
sessions and others reviewing the
previous day’s sessions.
The Plenary Scientific session
will headline the top abstracts of
the meeting and is always the most
well-attended activity at the meeting.
It will be held Sunday, December
11, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the
San Diego Convention Center, Hall
AB. This year’s Plenary will be a mix
of basic science and clinical topics
and will address questions such as:
Are peripheral mobilized stem cells
genuinely superior to those collected
from the marrow? Can platelets
be provided from immortalized
cell lines? Are mutations in SF3B1 a
key to understanding MDS? Is gene
transfer a therapeutic hope for patients
with hemophilia?
There are also several special sessions
including the Ham-Wasserman
Lecture where Dr. Peter Carmeliet
will address the topic of angiogenesis.
The annual Practice Forum will
also prove to be of great interest to
practicing hematologists as the Chair
of the ASH Committee on Practice,
Dr. Lawrence Solberg Jr., will lead
a session on how Accountable Care
Organizations will affect and change
hematology practice. This session
will be held today, from 6:00 to 7:30
p.m. in the Manchester Grand Hyatt
San Diego, Randle Ballroom DE.
There are a host of other sessions
including the scientific sessions,
oral and poster abstract presentations,
trainee-specific sessions, and
many others. We hope to genuinely
enhance your experience at
the meeting. If you have feedback
about the paper, please send an
