ASHRAE’s building management system has a variety of views into building conditions and systems operations. The living lab provides sensing and monitoring capabilities that go well beyond the needs for operating the building efficiently. In recognizing the need for these capabilities, ASHRAE’s Research Administration Committee (RAC) made a generous commitment of funds to greatly enhance the usability of the living lab for research projects. In addition, a number of vendors contributed to the capabilities October 2008 of the living lab through their donations of equipment and resources. This support has allowed the living lab to be developed as a true laboratory that can be used for experimentation, research and testing. A range of uses are possible including the development of new control algorithms, evaluation of new sensors and controllers and the assessment of building faults through the ASHRAE Journal 13
