AMCA hit a number of milestones this year. Membership crossed the 300 mark, with almost 50% outside of North America. In 2012, we began operating with staff in Asia and Europe as well as North America. Worldwide, AMCA Members have certified the performance of 2,918 product lines through testing in AMCA labs. AMCA-certified ratings assure system designers, owners and regulators that certified air-system products perform as represented. More than half of all air system products in North America have AMCA-certified ratings. AMCA is also working actively on energy-efficiency initiatives and life-safety code challenges. Air systems consume about 13% of all electricity in America*. That is why, in June of 2011, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced its intent to regulate fan energy. AMCA is working with ASHRAE and other associations to develop an industry consensus that targets a 30% reduction in air-system energy use by 2020, which is when DOE regulations will become fully effective. Of course, fans, dampers and louvers are instrumental in protecting the building envelope from storm damage, in managing air quality, and in controlling the spread of smoke during a fire. While it is widely accepted that fire destroys property, it is smoke that kills people. AMCA continues to work closely with code officials to ensure that louver strength, air quality and smoke-control safety systems remain robust and reliable. Asian members of AMCA are now served by Asia AMCA with accredited labs in Singapore and Korea. This fast growing region places an especially high value on the integrity of AMCAcertified ratings, which are often referred to as the “passport to export” in the region. This year, we are forming the Europe Air Movement and Control Association, with local leadership focused on the European Commission Directive for fan efficiency, which goes into effect January 1, 2013. As air-system energy efficiency and life-safety matters arise that impact member companies and their customers worldwide, AMCA will always be there to help.
