Guiding ASHRAE's Research Efforts
The ASHRAE Board of Directors
approved $3,513,700 for research projects and grants-in-aid payments for
ﬁscal year 2019-2020.
A large portion of this amount has
already been committed to the approximately 55 active projects already
under way. Also competing for new
project funds are 17 tentative research
projects and many other project topics
in various stages of development.
ASHRAE grants-in-aid (GIA) provide
$10,000 to each selected graduate student to conduct research in ﬁelds of
interest to ASHRAE. For 2019-2020, 19
graduate student GIA were awarded.
This month's issue features the
annual Research Report starting on
Page 81 and includes short summaries
of active projects.
FOLLOWING THE NEW ASHRAE
2019-2024 Strategic Plan, a new
research strategic plan will be developed by a new Research Advisory Panel
elected by the ASHRAE Board. ASHRAE
Technical Committees will continue to
use the existing research plan until the
new one is ﬁnalized.
The most recent version of the
plan was developed over a three-year
period with input provided by chapter
members, technical committee members, research fund contributors, and
representatives from HVAC&R industry organizations. The plan provided 11
strategic goals that address technical
challenges that limit ability to maximize building performance, energy

efﬁciency, and indoor environmental
quality.
Complementing the Society's
Research Strategic Plan is the
Research Implementation Plan, which
documents all technical committee research topics that support the
Research Strategic Plan or are tactical
in nature (such as updates and new
information for ASHRAE Handbook and
ASHRAE Standards, etc.) and have
been approved for further development into ASHRAE research projects.
The implementation plan currently
includes 88 projects in various stages
of development. The estimated dollar
value of these projects is $13.6 million. This, when coupled with the cost
of projects already under contract,
exceeds ASHRAE's current annual
budget for research. ASHRAE hopes,
however, to implement most of these
projects in the near future.
THE RESEARCH ADMINISTRATION
COMMITTEE (RAC) maintains stewardship of the funds entrusted to
ASHRAE by careful planning and oversight of the research program. ASHRAE
uses an extensive unpaid volunteer
network of TC members to prepare
work statements, select projects, select
contractors, and monitor research
projects to ensure that maximum beneﬁts accrue from ASHRAE-sponsored
research. Additionally, RAC plans
the research program, evaluates and
approves the projects and ensures that
results are properly presented.
