Exceeding Expectations
HIGH-PERFORMING BUILDINGS ARE INTENDED TO EXCEED THE
PERFORMANCE OF STANDARD BUILDINGS. But if the windows and
walls do not hold up their ends of the bargain, a building designed to be
high-performing may not operate as it should. A technical feature and
a column in this issue of ASHRAE Journal address these building components.
First, the technical feature describes energy modeling analyses
to assess the extent to which high-performance windows can compensate
for lower wall insulation levels and higher air leakage rates in new
homes (Page 50). Then, Building Sciences columnist Joe Lstiburek, Ph.D.,
P.Eng., Fellow ASHRAE, demystifi es " hot rod " wall assemblies and even
dazzles readers with a ditty to jump-start the column (Page 62).
ANOTHER COLUMN IN THIS ISSUE explores a topic that has become
an issue of concern in many areas of the world: wildfi re smoke. This
month's Residential Applications column discusses how wildfi re smoke
affects residential indoor air quality (IAQ) (Page 46).
SPEAKING OF IAQ, if you explored either of the exhibit halls at the
2022 AHR Expo, where IAQ companies exhibited their latest products
and innovations in full force, you saw just how pervasive this part of the
HVAC&R industry has become. Other companies with broader offerings
also were taking into consideration customer concerns and demands
for products that help promote healthier indoor environments. In this
issue, we wrap up our coverage of the 2022 Show by dissecting various
industry trends-including IAQ (Page 6).
