Study: Heat Can Increase Air Pollution Inside Cars
By Up To 40,000 Times
According to a new study published in Science of
the Total Environment, the materials in car cabins can
release high levels of semivolatile organic compounds
(SVOCs), a group of potentially endocrine disrupting
chemicals, into the surrounding air. The study showed
that nine different SVOCs were detected in the air
and dust of car interiors and that their concentration
increased at higher temperatures-and that turning
on the car ventilation system effectively reduced
chemical exposure. Nine different SVOCs were
detected in the air and dust of car interiors, including
at least five chemicals that had never previously been
reported in car cabin air. The concentration of SVOCs

increasing as much as 40,000 times at 80°C (176°F).
Turning on the ventilation system effectively reduced
chemical exposure, lowering the level of SVOC
gases by as much as 90%. It was recommended that
occupants ventilate a warm car before entering the
vehicle and have the ventilation on during driving, as
both temperature and ventilation have a significant
impact on SVOC levels.
100-Year-Old House Showcases One of UK's
Best Heat Pumps
In northern England, a 100-year-old house boasts
a cutting-edge heat pump that's making waves in the
energy efficiency community. The machine boasts
a coefficient of performance (COP) of 5.5, meaning
for every kilowatt-hour of electricity it consumes, it
delivers 5.5 kilowatt-hours of heat. In comparison,
average heat pump COPs in the UK typically range
between 2 and 3. Heat pumps are praised for their
potential to reduce global CO2 emissions by 500
million metric tons, according to the International
Energy Agency.
Engineering Team Uses Salt for Thermal Energy Storage
Researchers at Georgia Tech are developing more
effi cient heating systems that don't rely on fossil
fuels. The research was presented in an article titled
" Thermochemical Energy Storage Using Salt Mixture
with Improved Hydration Kinetics and Cycling
Stability " in the Journal of Energy Storage. It showed
that combining two commonly found salts could help
store clean energy as heat and had the potential to
heat buildings or be integrated with a heat pump to
cool buildings.
