Safety First
R
ecently in Aurora, Colorado, the concept of safety in HVAC design
entered public conversation when HVAC equipment collapsed in an
indoor pool area, injuring six people. Aurora Fire Rescue estimated
another 50 to 100 people were present at the scene when the mechanical
systems failed. The scope and cause of the incident is still unclear,
though it has caught the attention of engineers and stakeholders in the
industry when it comes to building safety.
Safety is also key in industrial applications of HVAC. The feature
story for this issue of ASHRAE Journal, " Steam System Pipe Sizing
for Industrial Facilities, " authored by Kevin LaPlante, P.E., LEED AP,
Member ASHRAE, discusses the proper sizing, installation practices
and common system design pitfalls of steam distribution piping. In less
extreme scenarios, piping may be noisy, fail prematurely or not function
as intended; at worst, improperly sized piping can fail catastrophically,
causing harm to humans and damaging property. For a technical dive on

And what about the less obvious things that cause harm? The IEQ
column this month, on page 32, describes the aggregate harm and health
impacts of indoor particulate matter on building occupants. The column
covers why it's time to reduce expose to harmful elements indoors, with
discussion on the history of ASHRAE Standard 62, MERV fi lters and more.
Comfort is also covered in this issue of the Journal. In Residential
Applications, the impact of IEQ and ventilation on sleep quality and
health is examined by Chandra Sekhar, Ph.D., Fellow ASHRAE, et al. The
column, starting on page 38, explores the factors impacting IEQ in the
sleeping environment.

settings.
