using less ventilation yielded significant energy savings.
Boiler natural gas consumption was reduced by 22% to
29%, and fan, pump and chilled water electricity was
reduced by 31% to 39%.
For some hospitals, these ventilation changes can
be done after careful design with programming and
software, requiring very few or no new components.
Design engineers must still take special consideration
to maintain required outdoor air rates, required
pressurization of certain rooms and any additional
equipment that may be necessary for a given facility,
such as variable frequency drives or bypass ducts.
As demonstrated by COVID-19's occurrence at the
project site, such " software-only " features can be
easily overridden during emergency conditions and
reestablished afterwards.
Extrapolating the results of this project as an opportunity
for U.S. hospitals, the project team estimated an
economic opportunity of $2.5 billion. The associated
decarbonization value could be 14.5 million metric tons
of CO2e, or the equivalent of removing over 4 million
cars from U.S. roads.
