The University of Louisville (Ky.) Belknap Academic Building project was about
maximizing building energy efficiency while working closely to ensure the bestperforming
building long term. The project used technologies including an energy
recovery wheel with dedicated outdoor air for first-stage cooling with demand
control ventilation and air-handling units to provide peak heating and cooling
while leveraging free cooling through economizer mode.
KOWLOON EAST REGIONAL HEADQUARTERS AND
OPERATIONAL BASE

The 18-storey Kowloon East Regional Police Headquarters and Operational Base
in Hong Kong provides solutions its users' varying operational needs hours.
The innovative design for manufacture and assembly (DfMA) was adopted in
construction of a critical plant room, which provides much higher benefits in
productivity, workmanship, environmental protection and site safety.
MIZUNAMI KITA JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL

At Mizunami Kita Junior High School in Japan, the students themselves
think, decide and operate equipment through trial and error. Net zero energy
consumption is achieved through the environmental experience of the students,
instead of optimizing energy consumption with an automated system.

The Materials Design Lab (MDL) in Illoinois was designed to be an adaptable
building layout with flexible mechanical, electrical, plumbing and technology
systems to accommodate both current research and unknown future needs while
meeting all safety requirements and save and conserve energy where possible.

Features of the Las Vegas Convention Center West Hall include 18 air-handling
units that supply air at a discharge temperature of 45°F and 50°F (7.2°C and

10°C), providing a reduced airflow over standard temperature airflows by 537,500
cfm (253 672 L/s), providing reduced air system size. A waterside economizer via
a plate and frame heat exchanger provides secondary cooling demands.

Natural ventilation in a quick serve restaurant such as McDonald's is unheard
of-and it was accomplished it the subtropical climate of Orlando, Fla. When
temperature, enthalpy, wind speed and precipitation are all within acceptable
limits, the dining room variable refrigerant flow air-handling units shut down and
the louvered windows surrounding the dining area automatically open.
MAJOR HEALTH PARTNERS WELLNESS CENTER AND YMCA

The Major Health Partners Wellness Center and YMCA building in Shelbyville,
Ind., was designed to complement occupants' health and wellness with improved
indoor air quality and increased ventilation. The consulting engineering firm
also enhanced the indoor air quality in the natatorium with optimized airflow
strategies to remove chloramine gases and other contaminants found in pools.
KITSILANO COMMUNITY CENTRE DEEP CARBON RETROFIT

Variable flow heat recovery chillers were installed in the Kitsilano Community
Centre in Vancouver, Canada, to optimize performance and allow continuous
chiller operation at design load, as well as in conditions requiring partial load
operation. This is extremely important as heating water supply temperature
control is critical for applications such as pool and DHW heating.

The Uber Mission Bay - World Headquarters in San Francisco, uses actively and
passively conditioned areas, intertwined with activity-type, while maintaining
fidelity to hybrid waterside and airside conditioning throughout all areas. Active
areas are places of focused work and collaborative assembly. Passive areas are
places of engaging transition and meaningful ideation.

With a design start in 2014, The Washington State University - North Puget
Sound, Everett, project incorporated an all-electric heat pump plant well
in advance of the growing, and urgently necessary, industry trend. The
building's controls and operations have proven to be simple and effective,
delivering a zero energy-ready energy use intensity (EUI) of 19 kBtu/ft2·yr
(216 MJ/m2) and a low maintenance burden.
