OBJECTIVE
Support occupant comfort with an
HVAC system that has the fl exibility to
adjust to individual preferences and
load variations. The system must also
facilitate future expansion integration
with existing historic structure while
minimizing damage or reconstruction of
the existing architecture.
SOLUTION
Daikin VRV water-cooled systems,
with Round Flow sensing cassette
indoor units, provided a comfortable
environment conducive for learning.
Building effi ciency was enhanced using
Daikin's control system scheduling to
shift loads in the building. In addition,
the use of ductless units minimized
penetrations into the existing building's
structure.
Duke Ellington School of the Arts is a high
school in the District of Columbia's Public
Schools District that combines a full college
preparatory curriculum with intensive arts
training. The original structure, constructed in
1898, maintains historic architectural features
of Washington D.C. The historic façade is
merely a front to state-of-the-art technology
enjoyed by approximately 550 students.
The newly reconstructed, LEED® Gold
facility encompasses a water-cooled variable
refrigerant volume (VRV) heating and cooling
system and indoor air quality that enhance
the learning experience. New construction of
165,000 square feet, adjacent to the historic
structure, now gives the school a total of 265,000
square feet, where low sound levels of the
mechanical equipment is very important for the
performing arts venue.
Daikin's manufacturers' representative, Havtech,
and mechanical contractor, Shapiro & Duncan,
in conjunction with Global Engineering
Solutions, proposed a Daikin water source
VRV heat recovery system that would control
the consumption of water and electricity
by providing zone control and simultaneous
heating and cooling. The project achieved
LEED® Gold certifi cation with most of the
points coming from the mechanical systems.
The VRV system utilizes high-effi ciency cooling
towers with ultra-low sound packages while
heat recovery provides a high level of energy
effi ciency throughout the building. Twentyeight
VRV water-cooled systems are delivering
a total of 466 tons of capacity. " The consulting
engineer and the mechanical contractor worked
diligently to optimize this building's total lifecycle
costs, by both leveraging Daikin's watercooled
VRV capability and functionality, as well
as by reducing the maintenance and increasing
effi ciency that the school will see for many
years to come. " - Tim Dorman, Havtech.
Daikin Round Flow sensing cassettes, installed
in 264 zones, became the favored choice for
the school particularly due to the low sound
levels (27 dBA on low fan mode). The built-in
intelligent eye sensor senses occupants in the
space and directs airfl ow around the occupants
while maintaining the same temperature
between the fl oor and ceiling. The self-cleaning
feature of the cassettes reduce maintenance;
the cassettes have a robotic arm to brush
dust off of the fi lter every night and deposit
debris into an interior holding canister. To
clean the canister, a vacuum hose is simply
inserted into the cassette. Integration into the
building's management system was achieved
with Daikin's iTM central controller. A Daikin
Navigation controller was installed in each
zone to enable occupants to control operational
costs.
The school has won several awards since
re-opening in 2017, including the Engineering
News-Record award for " Best K-12 Education
Project " for the Mid-Atlantic region and the
2018 " First Award " , an international architecture
design award for non-residential buildings.
