2024 ASHRAE TECHNOLOGY AWARDS CASE STUDY COVID-19, providing an environment more conducive to learning and teaching for students and staff. Since the project's implementation, the district's energy management team can readily address occupants' needs, program occupancy schedules and temperature setpoints and monitor system performance remotely through the BAS. These capabilities have led to improved occupant comfort, enhanced learning environment and optimized energy performance. INNOVATION Aldie Elementary has undergone several renovations and additions. Based on the building's age and the need to undergo local historical review boards for changes, a renovation project to reduce the site's energy consumption might have included a like-forlike equipment replacement. However, aiming to signifi cantly reduce this historic building's energy use through an out-of-the-box solution, it was shown how GSHP HVAC technology could be done effectively despite the negative impact on energy savings caused FIGURE 2 Monthly EUI Comparison of Actual to Baseline and Guaranteed. 25 20 15 10 5 Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec Baseline Guaranteed Actual Yr 1 by the code-required introduction of outdoor air. The incorporation of heat recovery into the DOAS minimized energy consumption for meeting the outdoor air needs. The project successfully converted the building to 100% electric, eliminating fossil fuel combustion and storage. It also enhanced the building's appearance by removing the fuel oil tank in front of the building and installed a ground loop rather than an above-ground HVAC system.
