Making the World That Will Be
This issue covers a lot of ground. We begin by exploring using dual-duct, dual-VAV to reduce cooling and
heating loads (page 14). We end with a discussion of an
aspect of Industry 4.0: using prefabrication to decrease
schedule timelines, maintain a steady workforce and
eliminate the need for corrective work (page 70).
In between, we ﬁnd out how occupants affect building operator's decisions, how ASHRAE's work in thermal comfort included the pioneers in
the ﬁeld, and what you need to know when designing for N + 1. We also
get a peek into the world of transport refrigeration and discover the
secrets of capillary suction.
It's a lot of information about many aspects of HVAC&R, but in this
time of epic change, it's vital to have a broad base of knowledge to maintain what we have and make the world that will be.
EVERYTHING CHANGES. 2020 has seen more changes than many
years, and it seems that will carry over into next year. Because of the
pandemic, the 2021 AHR Expo in Chicago has been cancelled. However,
the 2021 AHR Expo Innovation Awards will be given, and we can look forward to the 2022 Show in Las Vegas (page 6).
Other changes this year include the formation of ASHRAE's Epidemic Task
Force (ETF). Chair Bill Bahnﬂeth, Ph.D., P.E., Presidential Member/Fellow
ASHRAE, gives insights to what particular problems are being found on the
building and system level as owners try to mitigate the risk of infectious disease transmission. One problem is that deferred maintenance means that
systems have to be repaired before they can be upgraded (page 6).
I also want to thank Building Services Research and Information
Association (BSRIA) for its contributions to several of our Industry News
sections this year. This is a new partnership for us, and it has helped us
enrich our business reporting. The latest report starts on page 8.
ASHRAE has moved its headquarters north of Atlanta to an area that is
becoming known for its tech company footprint. As of this writing, most
of the unpacking has been done, and staff will soon occupy the building
on a staggered schedule, following the ETF's guidelines. Our new address
is 180 Technology Parkway, Peachtree Corners, GA 30092.
