Factors Influencing
Face Velocity for Fume
Hood Containment

Although there is a growing consensus that face velocity cannot be applied as a
sole evaluation indicator of fume hood containment performance,1 - 3 face velocity
measurement is still of importance in hood performance evaluation because of its
convenience and simplicity.2,4 - 8 The work reported in this article aims to understand
the impact of various influential factors on the robustness of face velocity for fume
hood performance evaluation through comprehensive field tests.
As one of the primary exposure control devices,
the fume hood has been used widely in chemical
laboratories to capture, contain and remove gaseous
pollutants generated inside of the enclosure, thanks to
advancements in aerodynamic design.9 The exhaust
airflow of the fume hood can also serve as a " pressure
regulator " to maintain the slight negative pressure
in the laboratory environment, especially when the
volume of the general exhaust ventilation is inadequate.
These advantages make fume hoods a ubiquitous
presence in chemical laboratories.
The fume hood's high containment performance
not only keeps indoor air quality acceptable but also
protects operators from overexposure to hazardous
airborne chemicals generated during experiments.
While the exposure potential should be much lower
under the protection of the fume hood, the robustness
of hood performance may be compromised by various
influential factors in the as-used (AU) condition.10 The
AU test in ASHRAE Standard 110-2016, Method of Testing
Performance of Laboratory Fume Hoods, includes two quantitative
evaluation methods: face velocity measurement
and tracer gas testing.11
Over the past decades, the great majority of research
in fume hood containment performance evaluation
has emphasized the use of face velocity measurement
as a potential indicator, either independently or
combined with other evaluation methods (e.g., flow
visualization and tracer gas testing). Application
of face velocity measurement is not recent, having
possibly first been proposed over half a century ago
by Saunders and Forde.12,13 They proposed that the
fume hood face velocity should be kept to at least
0.25 m/s (50 fpm) to prevent hazardous pollutants from
