Good, Bad and Dangerous
Things That We Smell
When was the last time you thought about the important
role that our sense of smell plays on our quality of
life and our health?
With apologies to those who don't eat meat, think
back to the last time you smelled the luscious scent of beef sizzling on a
grill. For meat lovers, there's nothing like it. The moment I get a whiff of
brisket on the smoker, when I walk by either of my town's two BBQ joints,
my appetite springs to life. Conversely, if you're ever on the New York
City subway at night, the haunting olfactory adventure might lead you to
swear off public transportation forever.
I've thought about all this during a recent bout with COVID-19, when

both my sense of smell and taste took a short hiatus. For a foodie like me,
that's not trivial. On the other hand, for a brief moment I did consider
riding the subway again!
This month, we pivot to another type of sensing, and a different journey.
Robert E. Stumm, P.E., takes us indoors, outdoors and even to the
outer limits of space, where he reports on the impact of CO2 on the
International Space Station. His interesting technical article, " Revisiting
the 1,000 ppm CO2 Limit, " explores many key airborne pollutants that
impact human comfort and wellness.
Also in this issue, we review the critical factors that impact robust
fume hood performance. In his article, " Face Velocity for Fume Hood
Containment, " ASHRAE member Kang Chen, Ph.D., refl ects on fume
hood containment, which keeps indoor air quality acceptable and protects
operators from overexposure to hazardous airborne chemicals generated
during experiments.
I encourage you to check out all our other great content as well,
including our Technology Awards. They spotlight the Queensway
Government Offi ces in Hong Kong, and Adlai E. Stevenson High School
in Lincolnshire, Ill.
For those of you who are reading this at home, sniff around the house a
bit. If you're not impressed by what you're smelling, cook something you
like. The smell alone will put you in a better mood.
