New Editor Onboard
J
ust four days into my new job as editor of ASHRAE Journal,
I was on a plane to Tampa, Fla., for ASHRAE's Annual
Conference. It was hot outside, but the action was in the
climate-controlled Tampa Marriott and JW Marriott hotels.
Jumping right into things is nothing new for me when
starting new jobs. I spent six years working at Pumps &
Systems magazine, another technical publication focusing mostly on the
water industry, with some carry-over into HVAC. I went to WEFTEC, a large
trade show (not on the level of AHR Expo but pushing 20,000 attendees) two
weeks into working at Pumps. It didn't take long for this former sportswriter
to fi nd a new calling-helping smart people do their jobs better.
That's what we plan to build on at ASHRAE Journal with its great editorial
staff already in place. If you have suggestions for articles on fundamental
applications of HVAC&R technologies, please email me at
dchamplin@ashrae.org. We want to run more " evergreen " technical
content, benefi ting future generations of HVAC&R professionals.
Among the highlights of my fi rst ASHRAE conference was the introduction

of ASHRAE President Ginger Scoggins, P.E., Fellow ASHRAE. You can read
her speech on page 14. We look forward to Ginger's presidential tenure.
In the news recently is the approval of ASHRAE Standard 241, Control of
Infectious Aerosols, for publication. Read more about this historic standard in
the Infectious Aerosol Control column, on page 26, authored by 241's chair
William Bahnfl eth, Ph.D, P.E., Presidential/Fellow/Life Member ASHRAE,
and vice-chair Max Sherman, Ph.D., Fellow/Life Member ASHRAE. You
can also listen to Bill and Max be interviewed on the usability of 241 in this
month's ASHRAE Journal Podcast.
Also available for listeners this month, a Hot Air episode with Refrigeration
Applications columnist Andy Pearson, Ph.D., C.Eng., Fellow ASHRAE, on the
utility of AI in the refrigeration industry.
I was fortunate to meet many ASHRAE members at the conference and
hear suggestions for what they would like ASHRAE Journal and its other
media forms to come. I look forward to learning more about the standards,
attending industry events and getting to know you all better.
