Setting the Standards
O
ne of the fi rst pieces of advice I was given as new editor of
ASHRAE Journal was to keep publishing articles on how end
users can understand and implement ASHRAE standards.
That's what the cover article does. ASHRAE Standard 55
defi nes relationships among four environmental thermal
comfort components or factors-space temperature, mean
radiant temperature, air movement and humidity, and two personal
factors-clothing and activity levels, that determine the level of thermal
comfort in buildings. The article, beginning on page 26, dives into the
comfort standard's developments and ways to use it more effectively.
Technical Editor Rebecca Matyasovski talked with the author, Tom
Hartman, P.E., Life Member ASHRAE, for the latest episode of Hot Air. " The
article fundamentally tries to deal with the old adage in the industry that you
can't control what you don't monitor, and we really don't monitor comfort,
which is the element that Standard 55 describes for our industry, " Hartman
said. " What the article does is it provides new approaches to distributing
conditioning in buildings so that we can actually provide comfort to a wider
number of the people that occupy the buildings at any given time. "
This issue should help you use a few standards better. The IEQ Applications
column (page 18) shows how compliance with CDC ventilation guidance and
ASHRAE Standard 241 impact energy use and carbon emissions in existing
and newly constructed commercial buildings in the United States. We have
our fi fth Standard 90.1 article (page 44) explaining updates to lighting in
the 2022 version. We're also excited to have the Engineer's Notebook column
(page 12), which focuses on designing safe, healthy science labs in schools.
We continue to monitor the horrifi c situation in Maui, where wildfi res

have destroyed the town of Lahaina. It has been reported as the deadliest
wildfi re in modern U.S. history.
Several factors are at play here, and at press time, the specifi c cause had
not been determined. Some experts have pointed at the climate emergency.
Another report pointed to a Hawaii utility that did not de-energize its power
lines in the midst of high winds.
" These kinds of climate change-related disasters are really beyond the
scope of things that we're used to dealing with, " said Kelsey Copes-Gerbitz,
a postdoctoral researcher at the University of British Columbia's faculty of
forestry in an article published by The Guardian. " It's these kind of multiple,
interactive challenges that really lead to a disaster. "
