Dust Collector
Design Demystified

Dust collecting is the process of collecting potentially dangerous dust from an area
and storing it to be disposed of later. This could range from a high school woodshop
to an industrial metal fabrication plant. It is not just wood dust that you could be
collecting, either. It could be aluminum dust, cotton dust or soap dust. (Yes, even soap
can be flammable.) Proper measures must therefore be taken in the design of the
collection system.
Table 1 shows the Kst value-how explosive a dust
can be when suspended in air-for common dusts. If
a dust has a Kst value greater than 0, it is considered
combustible, and code for combustible dust collection
must be followed. (If you are designing a dust collection
system for noncombustible dust, many of the strict code
requirements do not apply.)
Air Velocity and Duct Sizing
The first and most important design criteria in an
operational dust collection system is air velocity within
the duct. No other design tips matter if the collector fails
at its primary goal of moving dust. An industry standard
air velocity is 4,000 ft/min (20 m/s). This velocity
ensures that the dust does not ever slow down enough to
begin to clog the ducts. Minimizing the amount of duct
turns also helps prevent clogging.
To ensure proper air speed, we must know the total
cfm for the system. To determine that, we must sum
all the pieces of equipment needed for dust collection.

The best way to find how much cfm of dust collecting
a particular machine requires is to refer to the specific
product data catalog for that unit. However, that specific
information is not always available. Thus, there are
some typical airflow values for common machines
(Table 2).
After knowing how much air each piece of equipment
requires, we can size each individual branch to maintain
the 4,000 ft/min (20 m/s) air speed requirement. To
size the main duct, we must consider the use rates for
each piece of equipment. It is detrimental to oversize
the main duct and dust collector. Not every piece of
equipment will be on at the same time. If the main duct
is sized for full possible flow, then, when the system
is in partial use, the air speed in the main duct will
slow down, and the dust will fall out of the airstream
and begin to block the duct. Therefore, it is crucial to
determine the use rate for each machine.
