projects in various stages of development. The estimated total dollar value
of these projects is $12.5 million. This, when coupled with the cost of
projects already under contract, well exceeds ASHRAE's current annual
budget for research. ASHRAE hopes, however, to implement most of
these projects in the near future.

 STEWARDSHIP 
The members of the Research Administration Committee (RAC)
maintain stewardship of the funds entrusted to ASHRAE by careful
planning and oversight of the research program. ASHRAE uses an
extensive volunteer network of technical committee members to
prepare work statements, select projects, select contractors and
monitor research projects to ensure that maximum benefi ts accrue
from ASHRAE-sponsored research. Additionally, RAC plans the research
program, evaluates and approves the projects and ensures that results
are properly presented. In summary, ASHRAE research gets a lot of bang
for its bucks.
Expenditures for projects and grants-in-aid for FY 23-24 were
almost $2 million. In addition to the research project and grant-in-aid
expenditures, ASHRAE joined with government and private agencies to
fund and support special projects of mutual benefi t, including expediting
standards, producing technical publications and conducting research.
 RESEARCH PROJECTS 
ASHRAE, under the leadership of RAC, initiated 13 new research
projects and completed 9 projects during fi scal year 2023 - 2024
(ending July 31, 2024). The average cost right now of an active ASHRAE
project is approximately $142,496.
ASHRAE research projects result from work statements initiated
by the Society's technical committees or from unsolicited proposals
submitted by organizations interested in conducting research for
ASHRAE. Any research that advances the arts and sciences of heating,
ventilation, refrigeration, air conditioning or the allied arts and sciences,
and related human factors, is eligible for funding; this is ASHRAE's
mission.
Work statements originating from technical committees, after approval
by RAC, are offered to prospective bidders for proposals. The bidders'
list includes universities and agencies that have a history of cooperative
research with ASHRAE or have indicated an interest in ASHRAE

Unsolicited proposals are accepted from organizations interested
in conducting ASHRAE-related research from self-generated ideas.
We prefer to see unsolicited research proposals submitted in either
early May or December each year, so we have suffi cient time to review
the proposal prior to the Society's Annual and Winter Conferences,
respectively.
Whether the proposals are solicited from work statements or are
unsolicited, they should include the following information:
 Precisely what is to be done, by whom, under whose personal
supervision;
 Estimate of man-hours, materials, instruments and apparatus
required and costs for each;
 Information regarding the investigator's special expertise,
experience and/or ability that especially qualifi es the individual for the
proposed research; and
 Identify the contribution, if any, from the research organization's
resources for conducting the project.
 GRANTS IN AID 
ASHRAE grants-in-aid (GIA) provide $10,000 to each selected
graduate student to conduct research in fi elds of interest to ASHRAE.
Each grant recipient also has the opportunity of earning an additional
$1,500 honorarium if they author and present a technical paper on their
research project at the Society Winter or Annual Conference.
In 2024 - 2025, 20 graduate student grants-in-aid were awarded.

Abd Alrhman Bani Issa of Purdue University, Subhrajit Chakraborty
of University of California, Youngsik Choi of Texas A&M University,
Ejenakevwe Andrew Kevwe of University of Oklahoma, Julia Ho of
Pennsylvania State University, Chunxu Huang of Purdue University,
Michael Huylo of University of Texas at Austin, Jinyoung Ko of University
of Toronto, Sichen Lu, of Purdue University, Alexander Mendell, of
University of Toronto, Maria Milan of Toronto Metropolitan University,
Karlyle Munz, of Colorado School of Mines, Levi Reyes Premer of Purdue
University, Daniel Joseph Rush of University of Texas at Austin, Yu Sun
of Texas A&M University, Xuezheng Wang, of Syracuse University, Feng
Wu of Purdue University.
The highest-rated recipients, Jinyoung Ko and Abd Alrhman Bani Issa,
hold the added distinction of being named the Life Members' Club GIA
recipients, and their grants are funded by fi nancial contributions from
club members.
The latest grants brought the total to $5,647,392 awarded to 721
students during the 55 years the program has been in effect. Recipients
have represented more than 100 different colleges and universities.
