development into ASHRAE research projects are encouraged to be pursued
by the TCs. The implementation plan currently includes 76 projects in
various stages of development. The estimated dollar value of these projects
is $1.8 million. This, when coupled with the cost of projects already under
contract, exceeds ASHRAE's current annual budget for research. ASHRAE
hopes, however, to implement most of these projects in the near future.

STEWARDSHIP
The members of the Research Administration Committee (RAC)
maintain stewardship of the funds entrusted to ASHRAE by careful
planning and oversight of the research program. ASHRAE uses an
extensive unpaid volunteer network of technical committee members to
prepare work statements, select projects, select contractors and monitor
research projects to ensure that maximum benefits accrue from ASHRAEsponsored
research. Additionally, RAC plans the research program,
evaluates and approves the projects and ensures that results are properly
presented. In summary, ASHRAE research gets a lot of bang for its bucks.
Expenditures for projects and grants-in-aid for FY 22-23 were
almost $2 million. In addition to the research project and grant-in-aid
expenditures, ASHRAE joined with government and private agencies to
fund and support special projects of mutual benefit, including expediting
standards, producing technical publications and conducting research.
RESEARCH PROJECTS
ASHRAE, under the leadership of RAC, initiated six new research projects
and completed 13 projects during fiscal year 2022-2023 ending June
30, 2023). The average cost right now of an active ASHRAE project is
approximately $131,353. Two conference papers and four seminars based
on ASHRAE research projects were presented at Society meetings during
the past year and another 10 were published this past year in the ASHRAE
publication Science and Technology for the Built Environment.
ASHRAE research projects result from work statements initiated by the
Society's technical committees, or from unsolicited proposals submitted by
organizations interested in conducting research for ASHRAE. Any research
that advances the arts and sciences of heating, ventilation, refrigeration, air
conditioning or the allied arts and sciences, and related human factors, is
eligible for funding; this is ASHRAE's mission.
Work statements originating from technical committees, after approval
by RAC, are offered to prospective bidders for proposals. The bidders' list
includes universities and agencies that have a history of cooperative research
with ASHRAE or have indicated an interest in ASHRAE research. If you want

Unsolicited proposals are accepted from organizations interested in
conducting ASHRAE-related research from self-generated ideas. We prefer to
see unsolicited research proposals submitted in either early May or December
each year so we have sufficient time to review the proposal prior to the
Society's Annual and Winter Conferences, respectively.
Whether the proposals are solicited from work statements or are unsolicited,
they should include the following information:
 Precisely what is to be done, by whom, under whose personal
supervision;
 Estimate of man-hours, materials, instruments and apparatus required,
and costs for each;
 Information regarding the investigator's special expertise, experience,
and/or ability that especially qualifies the individual for the proposed
research; and
 Identify the contribution, if any, from the research organization's
resources for conducting the project.
GRANTS-IN-AID
ASHRAE grants-in-aid (GIA) provide $10,000 to each selected graduate
student to conduct research in fields of interest to ASHRAE. In 2023-2024,
20 graduate student grants-in-aid were awarded. These went to: Ahn
Jounghwan of Texas A&M University, Justin Berquist of University of Toronto,
Erin Blackley of Colorado State University, Yidan Cui of Purdue University,
Hashani De Silva of University of Cincinnati, Amirhossein Eisapour of Toronto
Metropolitan University, William Hobson of Carleton University, Jinglin Jiang
of Purdue University, Guowen Li of Texas A&M University, Jiacheng Ma of
Purdue University, Andre Markus of Carleton University, Seongjun Park of
Pennsylvania State University, Satya Sundar Patra of Purdue University, Elias
Pergantis of Purdue University, Mostafa Saad of Concordia University, Saba
Shahvari of Ohio State University, Brett Stinson of Portland State University,
Casey Troxler of Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, Shenbo Zhang of
University of Toronto, and Xi Zhao of Texas A&M University.
The highest-rated recipients, Justin Berquist and Saba Shahvari hold the
added distinction of being named the Life Members' Club GIA recipients, and
their grants are funded by financial contributions from club members.
The latest grants brought the total to $5,447,392 awarded to 701 students
during the 54 years the program has been in effect. Recipients have
represented more than 100 different colleges and universities.
