RESEARCH REPORT
POTENTIAL PROJECTS FOR POSSIBLE BID,
REBID, OR AWARD THIS FALL
1566-TRP, Equations to Estimate Evaporation Rates from
Heated Water Pools in Indoor Recreational Aquatic Facilities
TC 8.10, Mechanical Dehumidification Equipment and Heat Pipes; cosponsor:
TC 9.08, Large Building Air-Conditioning
This overall project will have several deliverables, of which the final one is paramount.
Namely, the research contractor will generate text, equations and/or tables with supporting
graphics which will be inserted into the ASHRAE Handbook- Applications. Designers will use
this new information to calculate the evaporation loads more accurately in pool enclosures.
Status: Conditionally Approved. Clear conditions with Research Liaison so project can bid.
1797-TRP, Assessment of the A/B Toxicity Classification Used
in Standard 34
TC 3.01, Refrigerants and Secondary Coolants
Societal expectations and demands for refrigerants with lower global warming impact drive
the industry to development new refrigerants that are both safe and functional. Understanding
the impact of using acute versus chronic toxicity for setting limits based on technically sound
toxicity criteria for HVACR products will increase the safety understanding of refrigerationbased
products; facilitate the adoption of lower GWP refrigerants including natural refrigerants;
further the application and understanding of refrigerants and products for the industry. Status:
Conditionally Approved. Clear conditions with Research Liaison so project can bid.
1864-TRP, Investigating the Applicability of Standard 62.1's
Ventilation Rate Procedure for Healthcare Rooms
SSPC 170 (Ventilation of Health Care Facilities); Co-Sponsors: TC 9.06
Healthcare Facilities & SSPC 62.1 Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air
Quality
The overall proposed research objective is to conduct a critical analyses of room types with
prescribed ventilation requirements in Standard 170 to identify if they offer opportunity for energy
savings from the design flexibility offered in the VRP, compared to the prescriptive Standard 170
design approach and without compromising patient, staff and visitor protective requirements.
Status: Conditionally Approved. Clear conditions with Research Liaison so project can bid.
1873-TRP-C, Upper-Air Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation
(UVGI) for Tall Spaces
TC 2.09, Ultraviolet Air and Surface Treatment); co-sponsor; TC 9.06
Healthcare Facilities
Research is necessary to address issues precluding consensus design guidelines for
upper-air UVGI systems installed in tall spaces. Mphaphlele's (2015) volume-based approach
to system design is met with apprehension from some system designers due to perceived
penalties on initial equipment and energy costs when the strategy is applied to tall spaces.
Under this room volume design strategy, a given room requires a certain number of UV fixtures
to adequately dose the space with UV energy. Status: Conditionally Approved. Clear conditions
with Research Liaison so project can bid.
1889-TRP, Graywater Use in Healthcare FacilitiesDetermining
Risk and Appropriate Design Responses
TC 9.06 Health Care Facilities
The project will address a gap in the current research related to the use of graywater in
facilities with higher risk populations and lead to more guidance in implementing this process
in a way that minimizes risk for community health and safety. Status: Conditionally Approved.
Clear conditions with Research Liaison so project can bid.
1910-TRP-C, Evaluation of Standard 103 Transient
Components and Thermostat Cycle Times on the Resulting AFUE
TC 6.03 Central Forced Air Heating and Cooling Systems
ASHRAE standards drive industry test practices and federal government labeling practices in
this area. The project will bring together the best experts in the field in TC 6.03 and qualified
researchers to reduce the complexity of the AFUE test procedure and to evaluate the interaction
of the equipment in this study and new electronic thermostats. The standard will be improved
with this new information and the research and manufacturing communities will have a peerreviewed
dataset for making decisions on design improvements and expected performance

levels. Status: Conditionally Approved. Clear conditions with Research Liaison so project can bid.
1918-TRP, The Verification of Openings, the Limitations of
Openings, Air Distribution and Humidity Conditions in Naturally
Ventilated Spaces to Complement Section 6.4 of ASHRAE Standard 62.1
SSPC 62.1
There is presently a lack of information in ASHRAE handbooks and Standards. The ASHRAE
Natural Ventilation Design Guide is being prepared for publication, this design guide uses
the compliance required by ASHRAE Standard 62.1, section 6.4, of which the 2H and 5H
dimensions are still limitations. Status: Conditionally Approved. Clear conditions with Research
Liaison so project can bid.
1919-TRP, The Effects of Duct Size and Aspect Ratio on Flow
Noise in Elbows
TC 2.06 Sound and Vibration; co-sponsor: TC 5.2 Duct Design
The rise in building costs demand efficient and compact HVAC duct designs, often at the risk
of excessive noise. Improved knowledge of the relationship between duct dimensions, pressure
drop, and the associated noise of common elbow fittings has great value to building owners,
engineers, and consultants. Acousticians will be able to predict the breakout and regenerated noise
more accurately across duct fittings, mechanical engineers can design systems without the fear
of excess noise, and the building owner will save money through empirical-based design. Status:
Conditionally Approved. Clear conditions with Research Liaison so project can bid.
1928-TRP-C, Improving Efficiency Test Methods to Measure
Air Cleaner Performance Against Airborne Particulate Contaminants
in a Recirculating System
TC 2.09 (Ultraviolet Air & Surface Treatment); Co-Sponsors: TC 2.03,
(Gaseous Air Contaminants and Gas Contaminant Removal Equipment), TC
2.04 (Particulate Air Contaminant and Particulate Contaminant Removal
Equipment); TC 9.06, (Health Care Facilities) & EHC, (Environmental Health
Committee
This project is divided into multiple tasks. Some of the tasks need to be performed in
sequence, while others may be performed in parallel. The task deliverables are spelled out in
the next section. This section describes the needed work. Some leeway has been given to allow
potential PIs to bring their expertise to the project. Many of the questions discussed below for
the project will be reasonably addressed in the proposal including likely sampling and analysis
techniques. The expectation is that the project will include the test plan development and not
sampling or analysis technique development that the PI should already be versed in. Status:
Conditionally Approved. Clear conditions with Research Liaison so project can bid.
1929-TRP-C, Evaluation of Building Life Cycle Analysis Tools
Incorporating Embodied Carbon
TC 2.08. Building Environmental Impacts and Sustainability
The project will catalog and evaluate building LCA tools and related literature that incorporates
LCC with the goal of providing ASHRAE an assessment of the " state-of-the art, " and gap analysis
that can be fulfilled by ASHRAE for ASHRAE members utility. Recommendations for potential
improvements and identification of future research and development needs will then be formulated.
This review and evaluation effort will summarize building LCA and LCC studies and programs that
are focused on methods and models of building life cycle analysis. Some of these categories of
evaluation include, but are not limited to, software robustness, accuracy, usability, compatibility,
adaptability, customization, availability, cost effectiveness, and flexibility. Status: Conditionally
Approved. Clear conditions with Research Liaison so project can bid.
1934-TRP-C, A Survey Study on the Development and
Application of Data-Driven Model Predictive Control in Buildings
TC 7.05 Smart Building Systems
Bridging the gap between theory and practice in building operation. Recognizing the
requirements and perspectives of the building industry will facilitate the dialogue between
academic research and field deployment. Inform researchers about the industry needs. The
collected information will provide insight to researchers about the most pressing practical
problems so that research projects may be oriented accordingly. Contribution to handbooks.
In the long term, information from the survey could also be useful in the writing of ASHRAE
handbook and standards. Status: Conditionally Approved. Clear conditions with Research Liaison
so project can bid.
