MSHP System Dry Mode
Given the TDHP system's humidity control
capabilities in achieving a desired relative humidity
target, efforts were made to identify a similar feature
in the MSHP system. The MSHP system's " dry mode "
option was tested but proved ineffective, leading to
signifi cant overcooling when attempting to control
humidity, rendering it unsuitable for comparison
with the TDHP system. Similar to the cooling mode
test, the MSHP dry mode was evaluated at a setpoint
temperature of 23.9°C (75°F). Although the average
indoor relative humidity was lower in dry mode
compared to cooling mode, the drying mode negatively
impacted indoor thermal comfort.
Figure 6 displays the indoor average temperature
in Zones 1 and 2 with the MSHP drying mode active,
indicating signifi cant temperature control below
the setpoint, resulting in thermal discomfort while
attempting to manage house humidity. The sawtooth
pattern in early hours of the day, when the outdoor
temperature is close to the setpoint, cannot be fi rmly
explained because the control logic is unknown.
However, it seems that the system starts to cycle,
interchanging operation between the two evaporators
(Zone 1 and Zone 2).
Achieving optimal humidity control is essential
for ensuring occupant comfort, promoting
energy effi ciency, preserving indoor air quality
and safeguarding the long-term sustainability of
residential buildings. Particularly in the hot-humid
and mixed-humid climate zones, HVAC systems
with robust dehumidifi cation capabilities and
implementing appropriate moisture management
strategies are critical steps in addressing the unique
challenges posed by high humidity environments.

Results from this study suggest that the TDHP system
stood out as a better option by demonstrating superior
moisture control capabilities, compared to the MSHP
system in such high humidity climate zones.
Energy Consumption
A plot of measured daily electrical consumption
versus the daily total enthalpy load (TEL) is shown
in Figure 7 to compare the energy performance of the
two systems. The TEL is computed as the difference
between the average daily total enthalpy of the air at
the outdoor conditions and the total enthalpy of the air
at the indoor conditions. The two negative values of the
TEL found for the MSHP are the consequence of mild
weather conditions occurring at the end of the summer
season.
Figure 7 shows that although the two systems had
similar effi ciency ratings, the TDHP system showed
better energy effi ciency while providing better thermal
comfort compared to the MSHP system. Additionally,
