Farooq Mehboob, Fellow/Life Member ASHRAE,
spent one of the most consequential times of his life in
the early 1970s when he was in his mid-20s and working
as the chief engineer at the hotel InterContinental
Dhaka, in what was then known as East Pakistan.
It was a time of geopolitical and social unrest in the
region, and this led, ultimately, to the formation of
two countries: Bangladesh and Pakistan. Mehboob, literally, was in the
middle of the perilous confl ict. His smarts and resolve led him to safety,
but not before he learned many valuable lessons.
Not surprisingly, the experience left an indelible mark on Mehboob's
life. It also prepared him with a unique set of skills and perseverance he
demonstrates to this day in both his business affairs and in his work on
behalf of ASHRAE. In an inspired and personal message delivered while
marking his inauguration as ASHRAE's newest president at the Society's
annual conference in Toronto, Mehboob spoke of his early life experiences.
He said his diffi cult early travails enabled him to understand the
importance of building strong relationships; of gaining knowledge from
those relationships; and of gaining the fl exibility and willingness to
embrace change. These, he said, are key elements he brings to his newest
challenge and those he will rely on to navigate this year as the Society's
2022 - 23 president.

ASHRAE President. His term ends at next year's Annual Conference
in Tampa, Fla.
For those of you who missed Mehboob's address in Toronto, we include
an adapted version of his remarks in this month's ASHRAE Journal. Look
for the article on page 10; it's one of the content items in this issue I recommend
you check out.
ASHRAE's new president embodies the diverse international nature
ASHRAE has reached-Mehboob lives in Dubai. That he was selected
president speaks volumes of the organization and the industry's international
focus. Mehboob's goals for his presidential year include securing
ASHRAE's fi nancial future and claiming its global leadership position.
He also called on all of us to embrace and lead the dialogue on diversity
in engineering and in industry.
Mehboob, who is CEO of his own company, this year is being asked to
navigate and address the challenges facing our industries. His personal
journey shows us that he is well prepared for the challenge.
