Answering the Vital Questions

ASHRAE research projects investigate a large variety
of topics in HVAC&R, but their common ground is to
develop and reﬁne technology and information that
keeps ASHRAE's standards and Handbook up-to-date
and accurate.
Research projects result from work statements initiated by the Society's technical committees, or from unsolicited proposals submitted by organizations interested in conducting research
for ASHRAE.
Some recently completed projects investigated annoyance thresholds
of tones in noise as related to building services equipment, studied IAQ
and energy implications of high-efﬁciency ﬁlters in residential buildings and determined thermal and moisture transport property values
for new building and insulating materials.
Sixteen research projects were completed in ﬁscal year (FY) 2019 - 20,
and the Research Administration Committee initiated 15 new projects. The average cost of an active ASHRAE project is approximately
$155,149. Expenditures for projects and grants-in-aid for 2019 - 20
were almost $1.6 million.
Four technical papers, eight conference papers and six seminars
based on ASHRAE research projects were presented at Society meetings
during the past year, and another 12 technical papers were published
this past year in ASHRAE publications.
LOOKING AHEAD, the Board of Directors approved $1.8 million for
research projects and grants-in-aid payments for FY 2020 - 21. Most
of the funding will go to the approximately 52 active projects already
underway.
ASHRAE's Research Advisory Panel is working on a new Research
Strategic Plan that takes effect in Society Year 2021 - 22. Topic areas for
the plan include resilience; indoor environmental quality; sustainability,
energy and resources; HVAC components and materials; tools and applications; and education and outreach. The plan outlines research goals
