Compressor on/oﬀ switches enhance easy, quick
maintenance. Straightforward, simple equipment
was speciﬁed to keep operating costs low and help
the building remain economically sustained.
In addition to the 20 ton (70 kW) SHC air-source
heat pump, ClimaCool oﬀers other models and
sizes that enable building decarbonization solutions. The standard air-source heat pump is an
excellent choice to replace boilers in heating-only
applications, as a number of diﬀerent size units are
available. For complete and ﬂexible heating and
cooling applications to match the building load, the
company has four SHC multiple header models
available, which provide ultimate space savings
and ease of installation and maintenance. Banks of
the SHC models can range from three to six units
and multiple banks may be use per project. The
SHC air-source heat pump is available in 20, 30,
50 and 70 ton (70, 106, 176 and 246 kW) units,
and the SHC air-source heat pump with full heat
recovery is available in 50 or 70 ton (176 or 246
kW) units. Water-cooled SHC heat pump and heat
recovery models are available in 15, 30, 50, 70,
and 85 ton (53, 106, 176, 246 and 299 kW)
modules. Heat recovery models have the added
beneﬁt of reusing waste heat (instead of rejecting it

to the environment) whenever the system diversity
allows. Whether a project requires heat pumps
or heat recovery units, both should be explored.
The ﬁnal decision will be based on system building
considerations, including building load proﬁle, use
of glycol and system diversity.

Air-Source Heat Pump DOAS Units Use
Intelligent Sequencing and a Total Energy
Wheel for Optimum IAQ Performance
The ASHRAE headquarters building uses two
air-source heat pump DOAS to deliver fresh air to
the building. The east wing of the building requires
a 35 ton (123 kW) system to supply the airﬂow
requirements of 8,200 cfm (3870 L/s). The system
performance for cooling is 18.75 EER and for
heating is a COP of 5.3 at design conditions. The
west wing uses a 15 ton (53 kW) unit with supply
airﬂow requirements of 3,900 cfm (1841 L/s), and
at design conditions for cooling is capable of 20.4
EER and a heating COP of 5.8. Air ﬁltration is an
imperative consideration for facilitating and
promoting indoor air quality. The selected units
include MERV 8 and 14 ﬁlters and ﬁlters for the
supply air and exhaust air through the energy
recovery wheel.
